The injection of umbilical cord blood to restore an individual's own blood production system suppressed by anticancer drugs, radiation therapy, or both. It is being studied in the treatment of cancer and severe blood disorders such as aplastic anemia. Cord blood contains high concentrations of stem cells needed to produce new blood cells. | ||||

Cord blood
Umbilical cord blood is human blood from the placenta and umbilical cord, which, if the cord is not immediately clamped, physiologically transfers from the placenta to the neonate and comprises one-half to one-third of the newborn baby's total blood volume, during a critical time of stabilization and immune system adaptations. Therefore, delayed cord clamping (at least 5 minutes after birth) is a high value for many parents. Some parents may choose nonseverance, a practice known as Lotus birth, which generally occurs out-of-hospital.
