Internet Glossary
Star network
A local-area network (LAN) that uses a star topology in which all nodes are connected to a central computer. The main advantages of a star network is that one malfunctioning node doesn't affect the rest of the network, and it's easy to add and remove nodes. The main disadvantage of star networks is that they require more cabling than other topologies, such as a bus or ring networks. In addition, if the central computer fails, the entire network becomes unusable.

Standard twisted-pair Ethernet uses a star topology.

Wikipedia English - The Free Encyclopedia
Star network
Star networks are one of the most common computer network topologies. In its simplest form, a star network consists of one central switchhub or computer which acts as a conduit to transmit messages. If the central node is passive, the originating node must be able to tolerate the reception of an echo of its own transmission, delayed by the two-way transmission time (i.e. to and from the central node) plus any delay generated in the central node. An active star network has an active central node that usually has the means to prevent echo-related problems.
