standard

RFC 2543 DoD-STD-2168 American National Standards Institute Electronics Industry Association American National Standard
<standard> Standards are necessary for interworkingportability, and reusability. They may be de facto standards for various communities, or officially recognised national or international standards.
Andrew Tanenbaum, in his Computer Networks book, once said, "The nice thing about standards is that there are so many of them to choose from", a reference to the fact that competing standards become a source of confusion, division, obsolescence, and duplication of effort instead of an enhancement to the usefulness of products.
Some bodies concerned in one way or another with computing standards are IAB (RFC and STD), ISOANSIDoDECMAIEEEIETFOSFW3C.

Standards
As defined by the Multilateral Trade Negotiations "Agreement on Technical
Barriers to Trade" (Standards Code), a standard is a technical
specification contained in a document that lays down characteristics of a
product such as levels of quality, performance, safety, or dimensions.
Standards may include, or deal exclusively with, terminology, symbols,
testing and test methods, packaging, marking, or labeling requirements as
they apply to a product.

The GATT Standards Code, negotiated and accepted during the Tokyo Round in
the 1970s, is designed to eliminate the use of standards, technical
regulations, and conformity assessment (certification) procedures as
unnecessary barriers to trade. The Standards Code is administered by the
GATT Secretariat in Geneva, Switzerland. The Commerce Department's
National Institute of Standards and Technology is responsible for several
provisions of the Standards Code which relate to the establishment of a
U.S. inquiry point, a standards information center, and a technical office
for non-agricultural products.

Standards

The Assyrian standards were emblematic of their religion, and were therefore the more valuable as instruments for leading and guiding men in the army. The forms were imitations of animals (1), emblems of deities (2), and symbols of power and wisdom (3). Many of them were crude, but others were highly artistic and of great cost. The Egyptian standards were designed in the same idea as those of the Romans, exhibiting some sacred emblem (5,6,8), or a god in the form of an animal (3,4), a group of victory (7), or the king's name or his portrait as (1), of lower, and (2) of upper, Egypt, or an emblematic sign, as No. 9.

Standardization
The term standardization or standardisation can have several meanings depending on its context. Common use of the word standard implies that it is a universally agreed-upon set of guidelines for interoperability. However, the plurality of standards-issuing organizations means that a document purporting to be a "standard" doesn't necessarily have the support of many parties. As Grace Hopper said, "The wonderful thing about standards is that there are so many of them to choose from".
