Rapid Application Development in the context of development applications software. The term is used in the context of object oriented (oo), component-based and vissually-aided software that allows for faster development of applications software. For example, Netscape Corporation in 1997 introduced a component-based Visual Java-Script intended to be for the web what Microsoft's Visual Basic software was for earlier applications development. Visual Java Scrip also licensed TV-Objects from TV-Objects Corporation in Princeton, N.J. for translating Visual Basic applications into JavaScript for RAD. In 1997 Apple Corporation bet the farm on Rhapsody for RAD.

Rad
The special unit for radiation absorbed dose, which is the amount of energy from any type of ionizing radiation (e.g., alpha, beta, gamma, neutrons, etc.) deposited in any medium (e.g., water, tissue, air). A dose of one rad means the absorption of 100 ergs (a small but measurable amount of energy) per gram of absorbing tissue (100 rad = 1 gray).
