Prominence Definition from Science & Technology Dictionaries & Glossaries
A term identifying cloud-like features in the solar atmosphere. The features appear as bright structures in the corona above the solar limb and as dark filaments when seen projected against the solar disk .
A cloud or plume of hot, luminous gas which is elevated into the lower solar corona from the top of the chromosphere . This usually occurs over regions of solar activity such as sunspot groups. Prominences are supported by magnetic fields. There are several kinds of prominences. In a surge prominence, gas moves up and down along the same path. In a loop prominence the gas is suspended in a loop. Arch prominences resemble hedgerows of glowing gas. Some prominences exist only briefly, others are quiescent and exist for months, almost unchangingly. They are best observed at the limb of the Sun. When they are in silhouette against the disc they are known as filaments.
An eruption of hot gases above the photosphere of the Sun. Prominences are most easily visible close to the limb of the Sun, but some are also visible as bright streamers on the photosphere.

In topography, prominence, also known as autonomous height, relative height, shoulder drop (in North America), or prime factor (in Europe), categorizes the height of the mountain's or hill's summit by the elevation between it and the lowest contour line encircling it and no higher summit. It is a measure of the independence of a summit.
