The Phrase Finder
Meaning
Swept off one's feet in a romantic haze.
Origin
Originally a cricketing term and only later applied to maidens meaning young women. In the cricketing context a batsman would be confused by the bowler and have his wicket 'bowled over'. Staying with cricket, an over is six balls and a maiden is an over that the batsmen fails to score from. Bowling a maiden over seems to have started in cricket and then migrated in meaning later.
Meaning
Excited, and/or turning cartwheels to demonstrate one's excitement.
Origin
From The Bible - Psalms 23:5. 'Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.'
Meaning
Drunk.
Origin
UK origin. Comes from the notion that eight drinks is okay: any more makes you drunk.
Meaning
Excessive or exaggerated.
Origin
In the First World War the phrase was used by the British to describe the infantry emerging from the safety of their trenches to attack the enemy across open ground. It has more recently come to describe dangerous or foolhardy actions. Often now shortened to OTT.
Origin
Gibe at the expense of the US army in Europe during the Second World War. Widely attributed to the British comedian Tommy Trinder.
