(See also Estimate Ratio; Ratio Estimate) The simple arithmetic average for a population; that is, the sum of all the values in a population divided by the size of the population. For this report, population means are estimated by computing the weighted sum of the sample values, then dividing by the sum of the sample weights. The mean is, thus, an aggregate ratio whose denominator is the total number of households or vehicles. (DOE4)

1. the more formal term than average, when we cite the mean or average to describe the air temperature of summer, we know that there is substantial variation around this value, but that it nevertheless gives a reasonable expectation about what the weather will be like on any given day.
2. also called arithmetic mean, is the most frequently used measure of central tendency, calculated by dividing the sum of all values by the number of values in the data set.
Note: one shortcoming of the mean is that it is very sensitive to outliers or extreme values

For example, the average life expectancy for people in a society with high infant mortality would be a misleading measure (see also MEDIAN).

The mean is a particularly informative measure of the "central tendency" of the variable if it is reported along with its confidence intervals. Usually we are interested in statistics (such as the mean) from our sample only to the extent to which they are informative about the population. The larger the sample size, the more reliable its mean. The larger the variation of data values, the less reliable the mean (see also Elementary Concepts).
Mean = (xi)/n

n is the sample size.

Common Concepts in Statistics
The sum of all data values divided by the number of elements in the distribution. Unlike the median and the mode, it is not appropriate to use the mean to characterise a skewed distribution (see also standard deviation).
WEATHER&METEOROLOGY
is the scientific term for average as in "global mean temperature." Milankovitch Theory states that major ice ages of the past may be triggered by regular variations in Earth's orbit around the Sun, leading to changes in incoming solar radiation.
