The way the product or service spreads through the popular mimics the behavior of a virus, hence the name; now enhanced by the use multiple emailing; word of mouth.

a system in which a person receives a commission not just on sales they bring in, but also on sales by people they persuade to join in on the selling (see pyramid scheme).

Note: Marketing can occur even if an exchange does not occur.
