janet. is the fifth studio album (sixth overall) by American R&B/pop singer Janet Jackson, and her first released on Virgin Records. It was released on May 18, 1993 (two days after her twenty-seventh birthday). Co-producing with longtime collaborators Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, the album would go on to become the best-selling record of Jackson's career thus far, selling 17 million copies worldwide. janet. became the first album by a female artist to debut at #1 in the U.S. in the Nielsen SoundScan era. It spent 6 weeks at #1, 36 weeks inside the Top 10 and a total of 106 weeks in the Billboard 200. In its first week it sold 350,000 copies.
