A change from one thermodyanamic state to another along a path which cannot be constructed by a series of infinitesimal steps, each of which is reversible. A typical irreversible change is a spontaneous one in nature; for example, rapid expansion of a gas.

In science, a process that is not reversible is called irreversible. This concept arises most frequently in thermodynamics, as applied to processes.
