Iron Curtain Device
Owner: Soviet
A Soviet superweapon.
When built, it will charge up and then you can make a group of units invulnerable for a period of time (~30 seconds). Beware! you can't make infantry invulnerable - it will kill them instantly - so you can also use the Iron Curtain to kill a bunch of enemy infantry group together.
Like all other superweapons, when the Iron Curtain is built all players are notified and the shroud above it is removed.

iron
\i"ron\ (ī"ŭrn), n. [oe. iren, as. īren, īsen, īsern; akin to d. ijzer, os. īsarn, ohg. īsarn, īsan, g. eisen, icel. īsarn, jārn, sw. & dan. jern, and perh. to e. ice; cf. ir. iarann, w. haiarn, armor. houarn.]
1. (chem.) the most common and most useful metallic element, being of almost universal occurrence, usually in the form of an oxide (as hematite, magnetite, etc.), or a hydrous oxide (as limonite, turgite, etc.). it is reduced on an enormous scale in three principal forms; viz., cast iron, steel, and wrought iron. iron usually appears dark brown, from oxidation or impurity, but when pure, or on a fresh surface, is a gray or white metal. it is easily oxidized (rusted) by moisture, and is attacked by many corrosive agents. symbol fe (latin ferrum). atomic weight 55.9. specific gravity, pure iron, 7.86; cast iron, 7.1. in magnetic properties, it is superior to all other substances.
note: the value of iron is largely due to the facility with which it can be worked. thus, when heated it is malleable and ductile, and can be easily welded and forged at a high temperature. as cast iron, it is easily fusible; as steel, is very tough, and (when tempered) very hard and elastic. chemically, iron is grouped with cobalt and nickel. steel is a variety of iron containing more carbon than wrought iron, but less that cast iron. it is made either from wrought iron, by roasting in a packing of carbon (cementation) or from cast iron, by burning off the impurities in a bessemer converter (then called bessemer steel), or directly from the iron ore (as in the siemens rotatory and generating furnace).
2. an instrument or utensil made of iron; -- chiefly in composition; as, a flatiron, a smoothing iron, etc. my young soldier, put up your iron.
3. pl. fetters; chains; handcuffs; manacles. four of the sufferers were left to rot in irons.
4. strength; power; firmness; inflexibility; as, to rule with a rod of iron.

The Knighthood, Chivalry & Tournaments Arms and Armour Glossary
Iron, as a material for armour
Surviving in a limited form after the fall of the Roman empire, until the 12th century the use of iron was restricted to weapons, mail hauberks, and casques or spangen helmets. During the 13th century sources for iron became more plentiful, and during the 14th century it became commonly available for use by armourers.

Recent tests by the Swiss Institute for Arms and Armour have shown that during the 15th century the use of steel , iron strengthened by the addition of carbon, was mastered by both Italian and German craftsmen. After the middle of the century most armour was made from steel rather than iron, making it more durable, resistant to rust , and more easily heat-treatable.

Iron Definition from Medicine Dictionaries & Glossaries

Dictionary of Medicine (Shahram)
Iron
An essential mineral. Iron is necessary for the transport of oxygen (via hemoglobin in red blood cells) and for oxidation by cells (via cytochrome). Deficiency of iron is a common cause of anemia. Food sources of iron include meat, poultry, eggs, vegetables and cereals (especially those fortified with iron). According to the National Academy of Sciences, the Recommended Dietary Allowances of iron are 15 milligrams per day for women and 10 milligrams per day for men. Iron overload can damage the heart, liver, gonads and other organs. Iron overload is a particular risk in people who may have certain genetic conditions (hemochromatosis) sometimes without knowing it and also in people receiving recurrent blood transfusions. Iron supplements meant for adults (such as pregnant women) are a major cause of poisoning in children.

Aids Glossary
iron
an important trace element needed for the production of red blood cells. Iron deficiency can lead to anemia.

Hepatitis Central (TM) Liver Disease Medical Glossary
Iron
Essential mineral. Iron's major function is to combine with protein and copper in making hemoglobin. Prevents anemia: as a constituent of hemoglobin, transports oxygen throughout the body. Virtually all of the oxygen used by cells in the life process are brought to the cells by the hemoglobin of red blood cells. Iron is a small but most vital, component of the hemoglobin in 20,000 billion red blood cells, of which 115 million are formed every minute. Serum iron may be increased in hemolytic, megaloblastic, and aplastic anemias, and in hemochromatosis, acute leukemia, lead poisoning, pyridoxine deficiency, thalassemia, excessive iron therapy, and after repeated transfusions. Drugs causing increased serum iron include chloramphenicol, cisplatin, estrogens (including oral contraceptives), ethanol, iron dextran, and methotrexate. Iron can be decreased in iron deficiency anemia, acute and chronic infections, carcinoma, nephrotic syndrome, hypothyroidism, in protein- calorie malnutrition, and after surgery. The iron assay is one of the less reliable tests on screening panels, so any abnormalities should be followed with other inquiry concerning iron metabolism (history of blood loss, alcohol consumption, lab tests for TIBC, ferritin, etc) before undertaking therapeutic interventions. A deficiency of iron may result in general weakness, paleness of skin, constipation, and/or anemia

Iron is a relatively abundant element in the universe. It is found in the sun and many types of stars in considerable quantity. Iron nuclei are very stable. Iron is a vital constituent of plant and animal life, and is the key component of haemoglobin.
The pure metal is not often encountered in commerce, but is usually alloyed with carbon or other metals. The pure metal is very reactive chemically, and rapidly corrodes, especially in moist air or at elevated temperatures. Any car owner knows this. Iron metal is a silvery, lustrous metal which has important magnetic properties.

Iron
Tubal-Cain is the first-mentioned worker in iron (Gen. 4:22). The Egyptians wrought it at Sinai before the Exodus. David prepared it in great abundance for the temple (1 Chr. 22:3: 29:7). The merchants of Dan and Javan brought it to the market of Tyre (Ezek. 27:19). Various instruments are mentioned as made of iron (Deut. 27:5; 19:5; Josh. 17:16, 18; 1 Sam. 17:7; 2 Sam. 12:31; 2 Kings 6:5, 6; 1 Chr. 22:3; Isa. 10:34). is mentioned with brass as the earliest of known metals. (Genesis 4:22) The natural wealth in iron of the soil of Canaan is indicated by describing it as a land whose stones are iron." (8:9) (Recent explorations have shown that iron ore is abundant in the northern part of Palestine.-ED.) The book of Job contains passages which indicate that iron was a metal well known. Sheet-iron was used for cooking utensils. (Ezekiel 4:3) cf. Levi 7:9 That it was plentiful in the time of David appears from (1 Chronicles 22:3) The market of Tyre was supplied with bright or polished iron by the merchants of by Dan and Javan. (Ezekiel 27:19) The Chalybes of the Pontus were celebrated as workers in iron in very ancient times. The product of their labor is supposed to be alluded to in (Jeremiah 16:12) as being of superior quality. Specimens of Assyrian iron-work overlaid with bronze were discovered by Mr. Layard, and are now in the British Museum. Iron weapons of various kinds were found at Nimroud, but fell to pieces on exposure to the air. (pious), one of the cities of Naphtali, (Joshua 19:38) hitherto totally unknown.

Wikipedia English - The Free Encyclopedia
Iron
Iron (IPA: ) is a chemical element with the symbol Fe and atomic number 26. Iron is a group 8 and period 4 metal. Iron is a lustrous, silvery soft metal. Iron and nickel are notable for being the final elements produced by stellar nucleosynthesis, and thus are the heaviest elements which do not require a supernova or similarly cataclysmic event for formation. Iron and nickel are therefore the most abundant metals in metallic meteorites and in the dense-metal cores of planets such as Earth.
