<jargon> A boundary across which two systems communicate. An interface might be a hardware connector used to link to other devices, or it might be a convention used to allow communication between two software systems. Often there is some intermediate component between the two systems which connects their interfaces together. For example, two EIA-232 interfaces connected via a serial cable.

interface
A linkage between two things. A user interface is the system of controls with which the user controls a device. Two devices are said to be interfaced when their operations are linked electronically. An interface box is often required to convert signals from one form to another. For example, in order to get MIDI data in and out of a computer, you need some type of MIDI interface hardware. This may hook to an existing port on the computer, such as the printer port, or (in the case of the IBM-PC) it may consist of a circuit board that is plugged into one of the computer's internal slots.

INTERFACE
A physical object that is the link between different entities enabling communication. In context of this glossary it enables a midi keyboard (or guitar etc) to talk to a computer. Interfaces can often be combined with sound sources and other MIDI devices. A basic MIDI device usually has one MIDI input and one MIDI output. MIDI devices with two or more extra inputs allow you to connect to more gear. MIDI devices with 8 ins and 8 outs allow you to connect many devices into your computer and can act as a patch bay. You can also play and record multiple sounds from different MIDI keyboards and modules using one computer program.

INTERFACE
The point or are a where two dissimilar products or grades of crude oil meet in a pipeline as they are pumped, one behind the other. In a packed or full-line pumping under pressure the integrity of the interface is well maintained. In simple English, this means that there is surprisingly little mixing of the two batches of product or types of crude oil as it moves through the line. Products are kept "pure" up to specification by drawing off the few barrels of interface-mix into a "slop tank."
