The seventh degree in the diatonic scale, being used by the Germans for B natural. See B.

the eighth letter of the English alphabet, is classed among the consonants, and is formed with the mouth organs in the same position as that of the succeeding vowel. It is used with certain consonants to form digraphs representing sounds which are not found in the alphabet, as sh, th, /, as in shall, thing, /ine (for zh see /274); also, to modify the sounds of some other letters, as when placed after c and p, with the former of which it represents a compound sound like that of tsh, as in charm (written also tch as in catch), with the latter, the sound of f, as in phase, phantom. In some words, mostly derived or introduced from foreign languages, h following c and g indicates that those consonants have the hard sound before e, i, and y, as in chemistry, chiromancy, chyle, Ghent, Ghibelline, etc.; in some others, ch has the sound of sh, as in chicane.

\h\ (āch), the eighth letter of the english alphabet, is classed among the consonants, and is formed with the mouth organs in the same position as that of the succeeding vowel. it is used with certain consonants to form digraphs representing sounds which are not found in the alphabet, as sh, th, &thlig;, as in shall, thing, &thlig;ine (for zh see §274); also, to modify the sounds of some other letters, as when placed after c and p, with the former of which it represents a compound sound like that of tsh, as in charm (written also tch as in catch), with the latter, the sound of f, as in phase, phantom. in some words, mostly derived or introduced from foreign languages, h following c and g indicates that those consonants have the hard sound before e, i, and y, as in chemistry, chiromancy, chyle, ghent, ghibelline, etc.; in some others, ch has the sound of sh, as in chicane. see guide to pronunciation, §§ 153, 179, 181-3, 237-8.
note: the name (aitch) is from the french ache; its form is from the latin, and this from the greek h, which was used as the sign of the spiritus asper (rough breathing) before it came to represent the long vowel, gr. ?. the greek h is from phœnician, the ultimate origin probably being egyptian. etymologically h is most closely related to c; as in e. horn, l. cornu, gr. ke`ras; e. hele, v. t., conceal; e. hide, l. cutis, gr. ky`tos; e. hundred, l. centum, gr. 'e-kat-on, skr. &csdot;ata.

(h) A proportionality constant that relates the energy carried by a photon to its frequency . Planck's constant has a value of 6.6262 × 10-34 J s.
(H) Compare with heat .Enthalpy (H) is defined so that changes in enthalpy ( H) are equal to the heat absorbed or released by a process running at constant pressure. While changes in enthalpy can be measured using calorimetry, absolute values of enthalpy usually cannot be determined. Enthalpy is formally defined as H = U + PV, where U is the internal energy, P is the pressure, and V is the volume.
(H) Element 1, atomic weight 1.00797. The most abundant element in the universe. Hydrogen occurs as H2 at ambient temperature and pressure, a colorless, odorless, and extremely flammable gas. Discovered in 1766 by Cavendish.

[from SF fandom] A method of `marking' common words, i.e., calling attention to the fact that they are being used in a nonstandard, ironic, or humorous way. Originated in the fannish catchphrase "Bheer is the One True Ghod!" from decades ago. H-infix marking of `Ghod' and other words spread into the 1960s counterculture via underground comix, and into early hackerdom either from the counterculture or from SF fandom (the three overlapped heavily at the time). More recently, the h infix has become an expected feature of benchmark names (Dhrystone, Rhealstone, etc.); this is probably patterning on the original Whetstone (the name of a laboratory) but influenced by the fannish/counterculture h infix.

In computer programming, header file is a file that allows programmers to separate certain elements of a program's source code into reusable files. Header files commonly contain forward declarations of classes, subroutines, variables, and other identifiers. Programmers who wish to declare standardized identifiers in more than one source file can place such identifiers in a single header file, which other code can then include whenever the header contents are required. This is to keep the interface in the header separate from the implementation. The C standard library and C++ standard library traditionally declare their standard functions in header files.

In chemistry, a hydride is the anion of hydrogen, H-, or, more commonly, a compound in which one or more hydrogen centres have nucleophilic, reducing, or basic properties. In compounds that are regarded as hydrides, hydrogen is bonded to a more electropositive element or group. Compounds containing metal or metalloid bonds to hydrogen are often referred to as hydrides, even though these hydrogen centres can have a protic character. Almost all of the elements form binary compounds with hydrogen, the exceptions being the noble gases and Mn, Fe, Co, Mo, Tc, Ru, Rh, Ag, W, Re, Os, Ir, Pt, Au, Fr, Ra, Pm, and some of the actinides.

The Planck constant (denoted h, also called Planck's constant) is a physical constant reflecting the sizes of energy quanta in quantum mechanics. It is named after Max Planck, one of the founders of quantum theory, who discovered it in 1900. Classical statistical mechanics requires the existence of h (but does not define its value).

In mathematics, the quaternions are a number system that extends the complex numbers. They were first described by Irish mathematician Sir William Rowan Hamilton in 1843 and applied to mechanics in three-dimensional space. A feature of quaternions is that the product of two quaternions is noncommutative. Hamilton defined a quaternion as the quotient of two directed lines in a three-dimensional space or equivalently as the quotient of two vectors. Quaternions can also be represented as the sum of a scalar and a vector.
