Jensen's Technology Glossary
Graphics
Computer images that contain pictures, drawings, and other forms of imagery other than text. Popular file extensions for graphics files are bmp, pcx, tif, and cgm. See CGM for a discussion of graphics that will cross platforms between Mac and PC computers. The best-buy graphics software options are ranked in PC Computing, December 1994, p. 205. Software options for 3-D rendering on the web are reviewed in the NewMedia, May 5 1998, pp. 52-64. The NewMedia web site is at http://www.newmedia.com Those authoring packages rated as "Awesome" include Live Picture Reality Studio at http://www.livepicture.com (800-724-7900) and Platinum Technology VRCreator at http://www.platinum.com (800-442-6861).  There are many other options rated as "Thumbs Up" or "Does the Job."  (See also 2-D3-D, and Paintbrush software)

Graphics
- class java.awt..Graphics
public abstract class Graphics extends Object
Tree:java.lang.Object - java.awt.Graphics
The Graphics class is the abstract base class for all graphics contexts that allow an application to draw onto components that are realized on various devices, as well as onto off-screen images.

Graphics()
- Constructor for class java.awt.Graphics
protected Graphics ()
Constructs a new Graphics object. This constructor is the default contructor for a graphics context. Since Graphics is an abstract class, applications cannot call this constructor directly. Graphics contexts are obtained from other graphics contexts or are created by calling getGraphics on a component.See Also:  create() , Component.getGraphics()

Multimedia Glossary
Graphics
Images are typically vector (object-oriented) or bitmap (rastor). See below Graphics, Bitmap and Graphics, Vector. After reading their definitions, test yourself. See: Yahoo for graphics utilities and design tips.

Graphics, bitmap
images are laid out in pixels , much like dots of paint on a canvas. As such, bitmap objects are not independent entities, which can be singled out for manipulation, but patterned series of dots. To enlarge (or reduce) bitmap images, the number of pixels is increased (decreased), often giving the resulting image a jagged appearance. (See anti-aliasing .) Scanners produce bitmap images (.TIF), as does Windows' PaintBrush (.BMP, .PCX): Bitmaps are one of the most commonly compatible types of image formats.
File formats include: IMB, DIBGIF, MTX, PCX, TIF, TGA, BMP, WPG, JPG, CUR, CO. (See Image File FormatsPaintShop Pro can be used to convert to/from various formats. Its help menu provides full definitions for all graphics file formats. PaintShop Pro maintains the aspect ratio of pictures when sizing, thus can reduce sizing distortion.

Graphics, vector
Graphics consisting of objects, each of which can be separately manipulated - e.g. sized, moved, (un)grouped, positioned to the back/front. The graphic components are calculated, hence can be sized without distortion. File formats include: AutoCAD DXF, CBM, EPS, HGL, PIC, DRW, WMF, WPG.
