InterWorking MSC
1. In a communications network, a network node equipped for interfacing with another network that uses different protocols. (188 ) Note 1: A gateway may contain devices such as protocol translators, impedance matching devices, rate converters, fault isolators, or signal translators as necessary to provide system interoperability. It also requires that mutually acceptable administrative procedures be established between the two networks. Note 2: A protocol translation/mapping gateway interconnects networks with different network protocol technologies by performing the required protocol conversions. 2. Loosely, a computer configured to perform the tasks of a gateway.
The software and hardware that interconnects two otherwise incompatible networks. It performs extensive protocol conversion to assure compatibility at all levels.
A special dedicated computer that attaches to two or more networks and routes packets from one network to the other.
Gateway Definition from Computer & Internet Dictionaries & Glossaries
A device that connects incompatible networks by providing the necessary translation, both for hardware and software.
One of the most common usages for the term is an on-line service company that givescustomers access to a server or a network as Internet. Inside a company, the term usually refers to special hardware that connects two different types of
systems, such as a main-frame to a local-area network.
© European Communities, 1995-2004systems, such as a main-frame to a local-area network.
An interface that connects two different networks (a LAN can be connected to the Internet through some kind of gateway). An interface that translates between two different protocols is also called a gateway.
A computer system that connects two incompatible services such as a commercial online service and the Internet.
The term "router" is now used in place of the original definition of "gateway". Currently, a gateway is a communications device/program which passes data between networks having similar functions but dissimilar implementations. This should not be confused with a protocol converter. By this definition, a router is a layer 3 (network layer) gateway, and a mail gateway is a layer 7 (application layer) gateway. See also: mail gateway, router, protocol converter.
Computer hardware and software that allow users to connect from one network to another. The interface between two opposing protocols.
A computer that links two networks, routing IP datagrams and often converting protocols or messages from one network to the other. The term can also refer to a system capability that provides direct access to other remote networks or services.
A gateway can be either hardware or software that acts as a bridge between two applications or networks so that data can be transferred between a number of computers. When e-mail gets sent between two servers or when you log in to a web site, there is a gateway that allows the connection take place. In a completely unrelated story, Gateway is also the name of a popular direct-order PC manufacter.
A computer that allows communication between different types of platforms, networks, computers or programs.
