Dithering Definition from Computer & Internet Dictionaries & Glossaries

FOLDOC
dithering
<dataalgorithm> A technique used in quantisation processes such as graphics and audio to reduce or remove the correlation between noise and signal.
Dithering is used in computer graphics to create additional colors and shades from an existing palette by interspersing pixels of different colours. On a monochrome display, areas of grey are created by varying the proportion of black and white pixels. In colour displays and printers, colours and textures are created by varying the proportions of existing colours. The different colours can either be distributed randomly or regularly. The higher the resolution of the display, the smoother the dithered colour will appear to the eye.
Dithering doesn't reduce resolution. There are three types: regular dithering which uses a very regular predefined pattern; random dither where the pattern is a random noise; and pseudo random dither which uses a very large, very regular, predefined pattern.
Dithering is used to create patterns for use as backgrounds, fills and shading, as well as for creating halftones for printing. When used for printing is it very sensitive to paper properties. Dithering can be combined with rasterising. It is not related to anti-aliasing.

Internet Glossary
Dithering
colors and shades by varying the pattern of dots. Newspaper photographs, for example, are dithered. If you look closely, you can see that different shades of gray are produced by varying the patterns of black and white dots. There are no gray dots at all. The more dither patterns that a device or program supports, the more shades of gray it can represent. In printing, dithering is usually called halftoning, and shades of gray are called halftones.

Note that dithering differs from gray scaling. In gray scaling, each individual dot can have a different shade of gray.

Dithering
When an image contains more colours than are supported by the host machine the software uses a process known as dithering. A colour not supported is reproduced by combining two other colours, usually seen as a solid area of colour overlaid with dots of another colour.

Multimedia Glossary
Dithering
blending colors to modify colors or produce new ones.

Steve's Digicams Digital Camera Dictionary
Dithering
A method for simulating many colors or shades of gray with only a few. A limited number of same-colored pixels located close together is seen as a new color.

Digital Imaging, Pre-Press & Desktop Publishing
Dithering
When a monitor cannot display intermediate colors or tones it attempts to achieve the required color by intermixing the two closest colors in a scattering (dithering) of pixels. This occursmost often when you attempt to display a full color image on a monitor with a 256 or a 64,000 color video display board. In an illustration dithering can make typography almost impossible to read.

Dithering
The technique of adding controlled amounts of noise to a signal to improve overall system loop control, or to smear quantizing error in an A/D convertor application.

Dither
Dither is an intentionally applied form of noise, used to randomize quantization error, thereby preventing large-scale patterns such as contouring that are more objectionable than uncorrelated noise. Dither is routinely used in processing of both digital audio and digital video data, and is often one of the last stages of audio production to compact disc.
