Definition of Conduction band

Integrated Circuit Terminology

Telecommunication Standard Terms
conduction band
1. In a semiconductor, the range of electron energy, higher than that of the valence band, sufficient to make the electrons free to move from atom to atom under the influence of an applied electric field and thus constitute an electric current. 2. In the atomic structure of a material, a partially filled or empty energy level in which electrons are free to move, thus allowing the material to conduct an electrical current upon application of an electric field by means of an applied voltage.

Conduction band
In semiconductors and insulators, the conduction band is the range of electron energy, higher than that of the valence band, sufficient to make the electrons free to accelerate under the influence of an applied electric field and thus constitute an electric current. Semiconductors may cross this conduction band when they are excited.
