The part of a carrier-multiplex terminal that performs the first step of modulation by multiplexing a group of channels into a higher bandwidth analog channel or higher bit-rate digital channel and, conversely, demultiplexes these aggregates back into individual channels. (188 )

Equipment typically located in a telephone central office that performs multiplexing of lower speed channels into a higher speed composite channel. The channel bank also detects and transmits signaling information for each channel and transmits framing information so time slots allocated to each channel can be identified by the receiver.
