Biomarker Definition from Medicine Dictionaries & Glossaries
An effect in a biological system. Measurements in the human body or its products. Some biomarkers, such as the levels of certain vitamins in blood serum, are used as indices of nutritional status. Others are used as indices of the risk or progression of disease.

A substance sometimes found in the blood, other body fluids, or tissues. A high level of biomarker may mean that a certain type of cancer is in the body. Examples of biomarkers include CA 125 (ovarian cancer), CA 15-3 (breast cancer), CEA (ovarian, lung, breast, pancreas, and gastrointestinal tract cancers), and PSA (prostate cancer). Also called tumor marker.

A biomarker, or biological marker, is in general a substance used as an indicator of a biological state. It is a characteristic that is objectively measured and evaluated as an indicator of normal biological processes, pathogenic processes, or pharmacologic responses to a therapeutic intervention. It is used in many scientific fields.
