BACKWASH
The counter-current flow of water through a resin bed (that is, in at the bottom of the exchange unit, out at the top) to clean and regenerate the bed after exhaustion (water treatment). Also, the process whereby a filtering mechanism is cleaned by reversing the flow through the filter.
