Definition of Autopoetic unity

A Dictionary of Postmodern Terms
autopoetic unity
a single living organism, such as a person, or a flea (Maturana and Varela )  It is their organization that defines them as unities.  There are first and second order autopoetic unities.  When organisms undergo structural coupling, they become a new composite unity which is called second-order.
