allele

Noun
1. one of two alternate forms of a gene that can have the same locus on homologous chromosomes and are responsible for alternative traits; "some alleles are dominant over others"
(synonym) allelomorph
(hypernym) gene, cistron, factor

President's DNA Initiative Glossary
Allele
A different form of a gene at a particular locus. The characteristics of a single copy of a specific gene, or of a single copy of a specific location on a chromosome. For example, one copy of a specific short tandem repeat (STR) region might have 10 repeats, while the other copy might have 11 repeats. These would represent two alleles of that STR region.

Glossary of Genetic Terms
allele
defined: One of the variant forms of a gene at a particular locus, or location, on a chromosome. Different alleles produce variation in inherited characteristics such as hair color or blood type. In an individual, one form of the allele (the dominant one) may be expressed more than another form (the recessive one).

Wikipedia English - The Free Encyclopedia
Allele
An allele (Pronounced: ) is a viable DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) coding that occupies a given locus (position) on a chromosome. Usually alleles are sequences that code for a gene, but sometimes the term is used to refer to a non-gene sequence. An individual's genotype for that gene is the set of alleles it happens to possess. In a diploid organism, one that has two copies of each chromosome, two alleles make up the individual's genotype. The word came from Greek αλληλος = "each other".
