ABUTMENT (of a Dam)
The part of a valley side wall against which a dam is constructed. An artificial abutment is sometimes constructed as a concrete gravity section to take the thrust of an Arch Dam where there is no suitable natural abutment. Right and left abutments are designated as one looks downstream.

An abutment is an end support of a bridge superstructure. Abutments are used for the following purposes:
- to transmit the reaction of superstructure to the foundations.
- to retain the earth filling.
- to connect the superstructure to the approach roads.
An abutment is also, generally, the point where two structures or objects meet.
