Japanese , is the oldest recorded name of Japan. Chinese, Korean, and Japanese scholars regularly wrote Wa or Yamato "Japan" with this Chinese character until the 8th century, when the Japanese realized that the Chinese word Wō 倭 "Japan" was derogatory and replaced Wa 倭 with Wa 和 "harmony; peace".
