Background
Modern Turkey was founded in 1923 from the Anatolian remnants of the defeated Ottoman Empire by national hero Mustafa KEMAL, who was later honored with the title Ataturk, or "Father of the Turks." Under his authoritarian leadership, the country adopted wide-ranging social, legal, and political reforms. After a period of one-party rule, an experiment with multi-party politics led to the 1950 election victory of the opposition Democratic Party and the peaceful transfer of power. Since then, Turkish political parties have multiplied, but democracy has been fractured by periods of instability and intermittent military coups (1960, 1971, 1980), which in each case eventually resulted in a return of political power to civilians. In 1997, the military again helped engineer the ouster - popularly dubbed a "post-modern coup" - of the then Islamic-oriented government. Turkey intervened militarily on Cyprus in 1974 to prevent a Greek takeover of the island and has since acted as patron state to the "Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus," which only Turkey recognizes. A separatist insurgency begun in 1984 by the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) - now known as the People's Congress of Kurdistan or Kongra-Gel (KGK) - has dominated the Turkish military's attention and claimed more than 30,000 lives, but after the capture of the group's leader in 1999, the insurgents largely withdrew from Turkey, mainly to northern Iraq. In 2004, KGK announced an end to its ceasefire and attacks attributed to the KGK increased. Turkey joined the UN in 1945 and in 1952 it became a member of NATO. In 1964, Turkey became an associate member of the European Community; over the past decade, it has undertaken many reforms to strengthen its democracy and economy, enabling it to begin accession membership talks with the European Union.

A product of the Galatasaray SK youth system, Fatih is regarded as one of Turkey’s brightest prospects. He made his international debut against Wales in August 1997. Arguably the most promising player in Turkey at present, the ball-playing midfielder has forced himself into the national team reckoning after some inspired club performances. A prodigious scorer at underage level, he shone in Turkey’s recent UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualifying campaign, scoring three goals in his last four games. Subsequently made his senior debut against Norway in February 2000.

The stocky midfielder has struggled to live up to the reputation he forged in his teenage years. He was the star of the Turkish Under-18 side that won the European U-18 Championship in 1992, and made his international debut in October of that year, but that was his last senior-team appearance for six years. Part of the reason for that hiatus was a loss of form following a broken leg, but he has recovered fully, and now takes up a regular place on the right wing. Though he was unable to get on the scoresheet himself, he was an able provider with his pinpoint crosses.

The flying winger played in nine of Turkey’s Euro 2000 qualifying matches, and proved a consistent source of “assists”. Joined Fenerbahçe in a big-money double move along with Ogün from Trabzonspor in the summer of 1999. Adept at running at defenders, Abdullah’s crosses from the left wing are one of Turkey’s main attacking weapons.
Erdem, Arif

Arif has built up a productive partnership with Hakan Sükür at club and international level. He started his career as a right-winger, but now usually operates as a second striker, though he can play on either flank, and has the crossing ability to match. He showed his excellent finishing ability in the qualifying-phase victory over Northern Ireland, when he hit a hat-trick in the space of four minutes. Arif made his international debut in 1994 against FYR Macedonia and he appeared three times at Euro 96. In all, he has won five league titles and the UEFA Cup with Galatasaray SK.

Previous Clubs: Trabzonspor, Galatasaray

The talented midfielder, rated by no less a judge than Gheorghe Hagi as one of the best in Europe, won four league titles and played 240 Turkish league matches and 52 UEFA club competition matches with Galatasaray SK, scoring a total of 43 goals. However he decided to move on after losing his first-team place. On the recommendation of former Galatasaray and Rangers FC boss Graeme Souness, Rangers made a £1.3 million swoop from Tugay in January 2000, although the midfield star had also been attracting attention from Newcastle United FC and Valencia CF. In signing for Rangers Tugay became the first Turk to ever play in the Scottish league. An attacking midfielder, he poses a real danger when arriving late in the penalty box and, despite his lack of club appearances this season, national team coach Mustafa Denizli has on several occasions pointed out how crucial to Turkey’s Euro 2000 cause he feels Tugay is.
Oktay, Derelioglu
Birthdate: December 17, 1975 Birthplace: Trabzon, Turkey Height: 1.80 mts Weight: 68 kgs Position: Forward International: 12 caps, 8 goals (as of July 31, 2000) World Cups: 0 Previous Clubs: Siirt Jet-Pa, Besiktas Transfer Fee: -
Got off to a wonderful start to his international career, scoring four goals in only his second game for the national team against San Marino in November 1996. He also started off impressively in the Euro 2000 qualifiers, scoring twice in the 3-0 victory over Northern Ireland in September 1998. However, he has since suffered a loss of form. Previously a perfect foil to Hakan Sükür with his strong running and work-rate, he only played a further five minutes after starting the first four Euro 2000 qualifying matches.

World Cups: 0
Previous Clubs: Antalyaspor

Rüstü has been Turkey’s first-choice goalkeeper since 1996 having made his debut against Iceland in 1994. Conceded just seven goals in his ten matches of Euro 2000 qualifying. He took over from Engin Ipekoglu at club and international level after initially impressing for the Under-21 side. Rüstü was particularly outstanding in Turkey’s historic 1-0 win against Germany when he made phenomenal saves from Ulf Kirsten and Oliver Bierhoff in order to preserve his side’s slender advantage. He also kept a clean sheet in the return encounter with the Germans in Munich. His main strengths are his willingness to come for high balls and his ability in one-on-one situations. Was one of the best GK of Euro 2000.
