Tauern Road Tunnel
The Tauern Road Tunnel is situated in the province Salzburg in Austria connecting the region Pongau and Lungau. It is an important tunnel on the north - south connection between Germany and Italy and Slovenia. Toll fee must be paid. Ranking among the longest frequently traveled road tunnels in Austria, the Tauern Road Tunnel in the Niedrigen Tauern (Lower Alps) region is a single tube tunnel completed in 1975 with total length of 6,401 metres. A second, parallel tube has been under construction since July 2006 and is expected to be completed in 2010. The north entrance of the Tauern tunnels is at Flachauwinkel (Salzburg), while the southern entrance is at Zederhaus(Lungau). In 2004, the average daily traffic was 17,000 vehicles, a quarter of which were large goods vehicles and trucks (4,353).
