Background
Spain's powerful world empire of the 16th and 17th centuries ultimately yielded command of the seas to England. Subsequent failure to embrace the mercantile and industrial revolutions caused the country to fall behind Britain, France, and Germany in economic and political power. Spain remained neutral in World Wars I and II, but suffered through a devastating civil war (1936-39). In the second half of the 20th century, Spain has played a catch-up role in the western international community; it joined the EU in 1986. Continuing challenges include Basque Fatherland and Liberty (ETA) terrorism and further reductions in unemployment.

Paul expresses his intention (Rom. 15:24, 28) to visit Spain. There is, however, no evidence that he ever carried it into effect, although some think that he probably did so between his first and second imprisonment. (See TARSHISH.)

    Smith's Bible Dictionary
    Spain

1 Macc. 8:3; (Romans 15:24,28) The local designation, Tarshish, representing the Tartessus of the Greeks, probably prevailed until the fame of the Roman wars in that country reached the East, when it was superseded by its classical name. The mere intention of St. Paul to visit Spain (whether he really did visit it is a disputed question.-ED.) implies two interesting facts, viz., the establishment of a Christian community in that country, and that this was done by Hellenistic Jews resident there. The early introduction of Christianity into that country is attested by Irenaeus and Tertullian.

Casillas is the keeper of the present/future for Real Madrid and the "Furia Roja" (Spanish Nat'l Team). He began in the worst moments of Real in 99-00 season, and had always been one of the best of the team and the league. In spite of his youth, Iker shows a maturity improper of his age. Cañizares, Jose Santiago

    Birthdate: December 18, 1969
    Birthplace: Madrid, Spain
    Height: 181 cm
    Weight: 78 kg

    World Cups: 2 (1994, 1998)
Previous Clubs: Elche, Merida, Celta Vigo, Real Madrid
    Transfer Fee: -
Cañizares rose to prominence with a heroic display on his international debut in a 1993 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Denmark. Taking the field after the first-half dismissal of Andoni Zubizarreta, he kept a clean sheet as 10-man Spain hung on for the 1-0 win that secured their passage to USA ’94. After so long in the shadows of Zubizarreta, he now faces stiff competition from Molina for the number one goalkeeper’s jersey. Cañizares started out in the youth ranks of Real Madrid CF but it was as a Celta de Vigo player that he established himself in Spain’s top flight. He later returned to Madrid but a less-than-happy stay at the Bernabeú resulted in a move to Valencia CF. A solid presence in Valencia’s goal during their progress to the UCL final of 99-00 season.

Dani is fast and has superb goalscoring instinct. Barça found in Dani the player they did not discover when he was 12 and with 22 Real did not valued. Now Dani seems to re-born again and can give to Barça goals and more goals. He has won the UCL, Spanish Liga and Super Cup. With few international caps, Dani has failed to impress in 'La Furia Roja'.

Originally a midfielder, Helguera has found his best position as the central defender of Real Madrid. But he continues with his original vision of game, superb passes and ball control, he can carry the ball from danger zone to the rival area with ease. Helguera’s ascent to a regular first-team place was largely responsible of Real Madrid CF’ UCL triumph in 99-00 season. Operating just in front of the defence, he is adept at picking up possession and redistributing it judiciously. He had a spell with AS Roma before joining RCD Espanyol. His impressive displays for the Barcelona club lead to Real signing him in the 1999 summer. He won his first cap against Italy in November 1998, and his excellent form this season led to his recall for the Spain’s recent victory over the Italians.

Spain (, ), is a Western European country. The country consists of Peninsular Spain which is located between the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, two archipelagos, one in each sea, and two autonomous cities in North Africa.

The Spanish mainland is bordered by the Mediterranean Sea to the south and east, by the Cantabric Sea that includes the  Bay of Biscay to the north, and by the Atlantic Ocean and Portugal to the west. Spanish territory also includes the Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean and the Canary Islands off the African coast. It shares land borders with PortugalFranceAndorra, the British colony of Gibraltar, and Morocco. It is the largest of the three sovereign states that make up the Iberian Peninsula — the others being  Portugal and Andorra. With an area of 504,030 km², Spain is the second largest country in Western Europe (behind France).
