Background
The principalities of Wallachia and Moldavia - for centuries under the suzerainty of the Turkish Ottoman Empire - secured their autonomy in 1856; they united in 1859 and a few years later adopted the new name of Romania. The country gained recognition of its independence in 1878. It joined the Allied Powers in World War I and acquired new territories following the conflict. In 1940, it allied with the Axis powers and participated in the 1941 German invasion of the USSR. Three years later, overrun by the Soviets, Romania signed an armistice. The post-war Soviet occupation led to the formation of a Communist "people's republic" in 1947 and the abdication of the king. The decades-long rule of dictator Nicolae CEAUSESCU, who took power in 1965, and his Securitate police state became increasingly oppressive and draconian through the 1980s. CEAUSESCU was overthrown and executed in late 1989. Former Communists dominated the government until 1996, when they were swept from power by a fractious coalition of centrist parties. In 2000, the center-left Social Democratic Party (PSD) became Romania's leading party, governing with the support of the Democratic Union of Hungarians in Romania (UDMR). The opposition center-right alliance formed by the National Liberal Party (PNL) and the Democratic Party (PD) scored a surprise victory over the ruling PSD in December 2004 presidential elections. The PNL-PD alliance maintains a parliamentary majority with the support of the UDMR, the Humanist Party (PUR), and various ethnic minority groups. Although Romania completed accession talks with the European Union (EU) in December 2004, it must continue to address rampant corruption - while invigorating lagging economic and democratic reforms - before it can achieve its hope of joining the EU, tentatively set for 2007. Romania joined NATO in March of 2004.

Known as the ‘Maradona of the Carpathians’, Hagi is, however, a legend in his own right. Romania’s greatest-ever player has played more games and scored more goals for his country than anyone else, and though robbed of some pace, he still possesses a considerable threat, particularly with his left foot. The six-times Romanian Player of the Year played five matches at Euro 84 and Euro 96, and he played 12 matches and scored two goals at the 1990, 1994 and 1998 World Cups. He made his international debut back in 1983 but was probably at the peak of his powers in the 1994 FIFA World Cup when he played a big part in Romania’s progress to the quarter-finals. After scoring with an extravagant long-distance shot against Colombia in the group stage, he struck Romania’s decisive third goal in a thrilling 3-2 second-round win against Argentina. Retired after the 1998 World Cup, only to be persuaded to return, but the player voted Romanian Player of the Century will definitely quit after Euro 2000. His club achievements have seen him win three league titles each with Steaua Bucaresti and Galatasaray SK, and a UEFA Super Cup with Steaua. His creative genius inspired Steaua, whom he joined in 1986, to the 1989 European Cup Final where they were beaten by AC Milan. He later played for Brescia Calcio in Italy and had spells with the two giants of Spanish football, Real Madrid CF and FC Barcelona. He joined current club Galatasaray SK in the summer of 1997.

He was top scorer in the Swiss League for Grasshopper in 1995/96 and 1996/97, but failed to continue that record when he moved to England with Coventry City - scoring two goals in seven games. After that short and unsuccessful stay in England, Moldovan moved to Fenerbahçe in Turkey. A powerful, thick-set striker with a natural scorer’s instinct, he made his international debut in 1993 against Israel and is now a first-choice in the Romania team, forming a highly effective partnership with Adrian Ilie.

Height: 180 cm
Weight: 74 kg

Mutu provided much of the ammunition needed for FC Dinamo Bucuresti to storm to the top of the Romanian league standings by the 1999/2000 season winter break, but his 18 goals in 20 matches also provided Internazionale FC with enough interest to acquire his services. Capped at U-16, U-18 and U-21 levels, Mutu made his full international debut in Romania’s 2-0 defeat to Greece on 29 March 2000. Began his career with local side FC Arges-Dacia Pitesti before joining Dinamo. 1999-2000 Top scorer in the romanian championship, even though he only played half season.

One of the finest exponents of the right wing-back role, Petrescu has great experience of major finals. He played nine matches and scored one goal in the 1994 and 1998 World Cups, and was one of Romania’s best players at Euro 96. His solitary FIFA World Cup goal came against England in the 1998 finals, a dramatic late winner after a typical surge into the opposition penalty area. Now he is a very experienced player who has played in two of Europe’s strongest leagues, Italy’s Serie A and England’s Premier League. He has enjoyed plenty of success in a highly successful club career, winning three league titles and one cup with Steaua Bucuresti, and the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup, the FA Cup and League Cup with Chelsea FC. Adept in defence, magnificent raiding forward, Petrescu is a tremendously versatile player who can play in defence and midfield - hence his excellence as a wing-back. He was named Romanian Player of 1999, and was also deservedly selected for Romania’s ‘Team of the Millennium’.
