FOLDOC
resolution
1. <hardware> the maximum number of pixels that can be displayed on a monitor, expressed as (number of horizontal pixels) x (number of vertical pixels), i.e., 1024x768. The ratio of horizontal to vertical resolution is usually 4:3, the same as that of conventional television sets.
2. A mechanical method for proving statements of first order logic, introduced by J. A. Robinson in 1965. Resolution is applied to two clauses in a sentence. It eliminates, by unification, a literal that occurs "positive" in one and "negative" in the other to produce a new clause, the resolvent.
For example, given the sentence:
(man(X) => mortal(X)) AND man(socrates).
The literal "man(X)" is "negative". The literal "man(socrates)" could be considered to be on the right hand side of the degenerate implication
True => man(socrates)
and is therefore "positive". The two literals can be unified by the binding X = socrates.
The truth table for the implication function is
A | B | A => B --+---+------- F | F | T F | T | T T | F | F T | T | T
(The implication only fails if its premise is true but its conclusion is false). From this we can see that
A => B == (NOT A) OR B
Which is why the left hand side of the implication is said to be negative and the right positive. The sentence above could thus be written
((NOT man(socrates)) OR mortal(socrates)) AND man(socrates)
Distributing the AND over the OR gives
((NOT man(socrates)) AND man(socrates)) OR mortal(socrates) AND man(socrates)
And since (NOT A) AND A == False, and False OR A == A we can simplify to just
mortal(socrates) AND man(socrates)
So we have proved the new literal, mortal(socrates).
Resolution with backtracking is the basic control mechanism of Prolog.

Resolution
This relates to the quality of a viewed image either on the PC Screen or printed output. For printed images the resolutions is measured in dots per inch or DPI. The higher the DPI the better the resolution.

Digital Video (DV) & video edit terms / Eng2Eng v1.0 (web compilation)
Resolution
The size of a video frame, measured in pixels. Digital video has a resolution of 720 by 480, which means that every complete frame (two fields combined) is 720 pixels wide and 480 pixels high.

Internet Glossary
Resolution
Refers to the sharpness and clarity of an image. The term is most often used to describe monitors, printers, and bit-mapped graphic images. In the case of dot-matrix and laser printers, the resolution indicates the number of dots per inch. For example, a 300-dpi (dots per inch) printer is one that is capable of printing 300 distinct dots in a line 1 inch long. This means it can print 90,000 dots per square inch.

For graphics monitors, the screen resolution signifies the number of dots (pixels) on the entire screen. For example, a 640-by-480 pixel screen is capable of displaying 640 distinct dots on each of 480 lines, or about 300,000 pixels. This translates into different dpi measurements depending on the size of the screen. For example, a 15-inch VGA monitor (640x480) displays about 50 dots per inch.
Printers, monitors, scanners, and other I/O devices are often classified as high resolution, medium resolution, or low resolution. The actual resolution ranges for each of these grades is constantly shifting as the technology improves.

Electronic Games
Resolution
A measurement of how many pixels are displayed on the screen at once (640x480, 800x600, 1024x768). The higher the resolution, the sharper the picture.

Desktop Publishing Glossary
Resolution
The measurement used in typesetting to express quality of output. Measured in dots per inch, the greater the number of dots, the more smoother and cleaner appearance the character/image will have. Currently Page (laser) Printers print at 300, 406 and 600dpi. Typesetting machines print at 1,200 dpi or more.

Television and Video Glossary
Resolution
Ability of a system to represent detail, expressed as pixels, lines or line pairs per some distance such as inches. For visual media, lines of resolution or line pairs of resolution is traditionally measured across the largest (perfect) circle that fits in the area being referred to. For a standard TV screen, such a circle would span 3/4 of the screen width.  A lot of advertising deception involves mis-stating the lines of resolution to span the entire screen width . The number of lines of resolution horizontally need not equal the number of lines of resolution vertically (or diagonally). Because pixels can straddle and thereby lose detail in a digital system but not in an analog system, the number of pixels does not equal the number of lines of resolution (see Kell Factor ). In NTSC analog video, it requires one megahertz of bandwidth counting just to one side of the carrier to give 80 (79.5) lines of horizontal resolution. If resolution is expressed in pixels, both the horizontal pixel count and vertical pixel count spanning the entire screen should be specified.  Click here for more discussion on resolution.

Resolution
The quality of any digital image, whether printed or displayed on a screen, depends in part on its resolution—the number of pixels used to create the image. More and smaller pixels adds detail and sharpens edges.

Glossary of Electronic Music Terms
resolution
The fineness of the divisions into which a sensing or encoding system is divided. The higher the resolution, the more accurate the digital representation of the original signal will be.

Glossary of Computer and Internet Terms
Resolution
This term is used to describe how fine of an image a monitor can display and a printer can print. With printers, resolution is measured by the number of pixels per inch the printer can print. This measurement is known as dots per inch, or "dpi". Similarly, the resolution of a scanner is measured in dpi. 600 dpi is a reasonable resolution for a consumer level printer or scanner. Because the sizes of monitors differ, monitor resolution can't be measured in dpi. Instead, the resolution of a monitor refers to the number of pixels that can be displayed on the screen. For example, in a 640 x 480 resolution, there are 640 horizontal lines are drawn across the screen and 480 drawn vertically. Some common monitor resolutions are 640 x 480, 800 x 600, 1,024 x 768, and 1,280 x 1,024.

Digital Imaging, Pre-Press & Desktop Publishing
Resolution
A measurement of the amount of detail in an image file as measured in units per inch such as dpi, ppi, or lpi: Dots per inch, Pixels per inch, or lines per inch. Sometimes resolution is measured in units per millimeter. a ``Res 14" file would be scanned in at 14 pixels per millimeter which would be equivalent to 355.6 ppi (14 x 25.4 = 355.6)

Resolution, Resolutory Condition
RESOLUTION - The act by which a contract which existed and was good, is rendered null.

Resolution differs essentially from rescission. The former presupposes the contract to have been valid, and it is owing to a cause posterior to the agreement that the resolution takes place; while rescission, on the contrary, supposes that some vice or defect annulled the contract from the beginning. Resolution may be by consent of the parties or by the decision of a competent tribunal; rescission must always be by the judgment of a court.

RESOLUTORY CONDITION - On which has for its object, when accomplished, the revocation of the principal obligation; for example, I will sell you my crop of cotton, if my ship America does not arrive in the United States, within six months. My ship arrives in one month, my contract with you is revoked.

Resolution
An experimental design of resolution R is one in which no l-way interactions are confounded with any other interaction of order less than R - l. For example, in a design of resolution R equal to 5, no l = 2-way interactions are confounded with any other interaction of order less than R - l = 3, so main effects are unconfounded with each other, main effects are unconfounded with 2-way interactions, and 2-way interactions are unconfounded with each other. Resolution
In general, this refers to how sharp and clear an image looks on screen or on paper, and how much detail you can see. It's usually determined by the number of dots (or pixels) per square inch (the more there are, the higher the resolution) and is used to describe printers, monitors, and scanners.

Glossary of liquid chromatographic terms
Resolution
(Rs). Ability of a column to separate chromatographic peaks. It is usually expressed in terms of the separation of two peaks. One attempts to achieve the best resolution possible. Resolution can be calculated in two ways: Rs = 2(tR.2 - tR.1)/(Wb.1 + Wb.2) or Rs = 1/4(a-1/a) (k'/1+k')N1/2 A value of 1 is considered to be the minimum for a measurable separation to occur and to allow good quantitation . Values of 1.7 or larger are generally desirable for rugged methods
