parameter
A user-adjustable quantity that governs some aspect of a device's performance. Normally, the settings for all of the parameters that make up a synthesizer patch can be changed by the user and stored in memory, but the parameters themselves are defined by the operating system and cannot be altered.

Parameter
(n.)
The ratio of the three crystallographic axes which determines the position of any plane; also, the fundamental axial ratio for a given species.
(n.)
Specifically (Conic Sections), in the ellipse and hyperbola, a third proportional to any diameter and its conjugate, or in the parabola, to any abscissa and the corresponding ordinate.
(n.)
A term applied to some characteristic magnitude whose value, invariable as long as one and the same function, curve, surface, etc., is considered, serves to distinguish that function, curve, surface, etc., from others of the same kind or family.

Parameter
(l) that which determines the structure of a system. Parameters themselves can be changed by input s, but usually the parameters determine how input will be transformed into output s. In the linear equation y = ax + b, the slope "a" and the y-intercept "b" are the parameters; "x" is the independent variable and "y" the dependent variable. (Umpleby ) (2) In computer science parameter is an entry in a command or routine that must be replaced with specific data prior to execution. (Arbib) (3) In a system theory parameters are used to distinguish between systems that are described by similar sets of equations--the choice of parameters fits the model to a specific situation. (Arbib)
The New York Times Magazine of May l3, l979, discusses definitions of parameter". The shortest one that seems neat: parameter - that what gives definition. another one: PARAMETER -a constant whose value may vary .. limit combining both: parameter - a variable that gives definition to a system.
That what distinguishes between systems of the same organization. The input to a system which determines its mode of operation and thus defines what kind it is. In modelling, a value, usually a coefficient in an equation, that can be made to vary across different models with otherwise similar structure or across different simulations by the same model but is constant in each application. The choice of parameters allows an experimenter to fit the model to a given situation. (Krippendorff )

Parameter
One of the elements of an experiment which can be varied, but which the experimenter tries to control or maintain constant during the course of a specific experiment, while intentionally altering the independent variable and observing changes in the dependent variable. Parameters in one experiment (stimulus strength, for example) might well be independent variables in another.
Originally, the variable elements or terms of an equation that determine the overall position within the axes of the line or figure described by the equation; to be contrasted with the independent variable, specific values for which are uniquely related to specific values of the dependent variable. Constants or invariants always have the same value, in whatever equation they occur. In the equation Y = e(a-bX), X is the independent variable, Y is the dependent variable, e (the base of the system of natural logarithms: 2.7182+) is a constant, and a and b are parameters.

Parameter
Parameters, in the plural form, has recently become popular with non-technical users to mean limits, but this should not be confused with the word's technical meaning.
In mathematics, statistics, and the mathematical sciences, parameters (L: auxiliary measure) are quantities that define certain relatively constant characteristics of systems or functions. Often represented by θ in general form, other symbols carry standard, specific meanings. When evaluating the function over a domain or determining the response of the system over a period of time, the independent variables are varied, while the parameters are held constant. The function or system may then be reevaluated or reprocessed with different parameters, to give a function or system with different behavior.
