WEATHER&METEOROLOGY
linewidth (absorption spectrum)
Width of a dark absorption line (interval) in the spectrum of light from a gas, caused by gas molecules absorbing at that particular wavelength. Finite linewidth can be caused by the finite lifetime of the molecular substance, Doppler broadening, and collision broadening (shortening the lifetime of molecular states by collisions).

Fiber Optics, Optical Networking Terms
Linewidth
1. A measure of the extent of a spectrum. For a source, the width of wavelengths contained in the output at one half of the wavelength of peak power. Typical spectral widths are 50 to 160 nm for an LED and 0.1-5 nm for a laser diode. 2. Any optical signal is spread at least a small amount onto neighboring wavelengths. Spectral width is the range of wavelengths over which one particular signal is transmitted.

Wikipedia English - The Free Encyclopedia
Spectral linewidth
The spectral linewidth characterizes the width of a spectral line, such as in the electromagnetic emission spectrum of an atom, or the frequency spectrum of an acoustic or electronic system. For example, the emission of an atom usually has a very thin spectral linewidth, as only transitions between discrete energy levels are allowed, leading to emission of photons with a certain energy.
