note: the american jabiru (mycteria americana) is white, with the head and neck black and nearly bare of feathers. the east indian and australian (xenorhynchus australis) has the neck, head, and back covered with glossy, dark green feathers, changing on the head to purple. the african jabiru (mycteria, or ephippiorhynchus, senegalensis) has the neck, head, wing coverts, and tail, black, and is called also saddle-billed stork.

Jabiru
This article is about the bird Jabiru mycteria; for other uses, see Jabiru (disambiguation).

The Jabiru (Jabiru mycteria) is a large stork found in the Americas from Mexico to Argentina, except west of the Andes. It is most common in the Pantanal region of Brazil and the Eastern Chaco region of Paraguay. It is the only member of the genus Jabiru. The name comes from the Tupi-Guaraní language and means "swollen neck".
