Background
Italy became a nation-state in 1861 when the city-states of the peninsula, along with Sardinia and Sicily, were united under King Victor EMMANUEL II. An era of parliamentary government came to a close in the early 1920s when Benito MUSSOLINI established a Fascist dictatorship. His disastrous alliance with Nazi Germany led to Italy's defeat in World War II. A democratic republic replaced the monarchy in 1946 and economic revival followed. Italy was a charter member of NATO and the European Economic Community (EEC). It has been at the forefront of European economic and political unification, joining the Economic and Monetary Union in 1999. Persistent problems include illegal immigration, organized crime, corruption, high unemployment, sluggish economic growth, and the low incomes and technical standards of southern Italy compared with the prosperous north.

The Italian national football team is the national football team of Italy and is controlled by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC - Federazione Italiana Giuoco Calcio).
Italy is considered one of the most successful national teams, having won three World Cups (1934, 1938, 1982), one European championship (1968), and one Olympic Gold Medal (1936).
The traditional jersey colour of the national team (as well as of all Italian teams and athletes, except in motor sports) is sky blue (azzurro, in Italian), and therefore national team members are nicknamed Azzurri.

After reaching his top level in 1993, when he won many international titles, everything went down since Roberto Baggio failed the last penalty in the final game of USA 1994 versus Brazil. Juventus sold him to AC Milan, his place was to be covered by a young man named Alessandro del Piero. He stay 2 seasons in Milan winning one. For 1997-98 season Baggio signed with Bologna where he played great and was the best Italian scorer of the championship, above del Piero. Buffon is considerated the goalkeeper with more future from Italy and the world, has been called the goalkeeper of the next decade (and why not of the next 2 decades?), although his present is already really brilliant. Gianluigi highlights for his security, know how to behave and his maturity, own conditions of a consecrated goalkeeper. He is agile, sure and has demonstrated that the pressure of playing against the best teams and players of the world don't affect him. He played midfield on amateur soccer, and maybe that's why he doesn't have problems when playing the ball with his feet. Buffon is always very attentive of the development of the games and is always prepared to get out of the box in order to cut the actions of the rivals. With the Italian National team he went to Atlanta 96 Olympic Games and France 98 World Cup but he was the second choice keeper after Gianluca Pagliuca, in both competitions. He was bought by Atalanta, where he succeeded to show all his best: Top-Scorer with 24 goals, reaching Platini's record to score against each team in the Serie A. For the 1997-98 season, his dreams come true. He was bought by Juventus management. Superpippo, as he is called, arrived from a city where Juventus is followed a lot. When he was still a kid, his parents wanted him to play as goal keeper, and he obeyed them. But, one fine day, his instint made him play as attacker and began scoring numerous goals. He is a humile playery, but sure of himself and his self capacities. Surely, he is one of the best young players, italian soccer can offer. At Juventus, everyone expects a lot from him. He already gave a demonstration of his talents. He is very able in getting unmarked and is very opportunist. He is considered a remake of Paolo Rossi, but he dislikes these comparisons. Together with Del Piero, they are the most representative duo of the new "Italian Boys".

Alessandro can act like left or central defender, the one that better adapts to the requirements of the game. His capacity of leadership makes him a notable player at any match, in spite of his youth, Nesta has security, concentration and knowledge to be in defense. Elegant in his movements and fast in the crossing, Nesta has a considerable technical capacity, that allows him to dominate and move the ball with both legs. In attack, on the other hand, his contribution is not so important and took him 6 seasons to score his first Serie A goal.

Winner of the Silver Shoe trophie in France 1998 World Cup, the best of Christian is his great play back to the goal, his great ability to protect the ball, which allows the arrival of his companions, his fantastic capacity to open empty places taking with him more than one defender, and his ability to find a position which allows him to receive the ball. Gianfranco managed to stand out and draw attention to himself, showing he is fast, courageous and with a lot of initiative on the pitch. In November 1996 Gianfranco was bought by Chelsea for £ 4.5 million. Rino was at the centre of a heated debate when, following the Bosman ruling, he was plucked from Perugia´s nursery team aged seventeen and went off to Scotland with a contract worth several hundred million lira a year. Perugia’s president, Gaucci, had refused to offer him professional terms. His time in Scottish football helped his development on and off the park. The Scottish supporters rechristened him "Braveheart" on account of the grit and tenacity which are the hallmarks of his game. In Salerno they saddled him with a different label instead, that of "The White Davids". A lifelong Milan fan, he has joined the club he used to dream of playing for, and finds himself reunited with Abbiati and Ambrosini, team-mates and brothers-in-arms at Under-21 level. The giant 'keeper has shown stunning form in recent seasons, but has still not been able to dislodge the much younger Gianluigi Buffon as Dino Zoff's number one. Though he made his international debut in 1995, his international appearances have been limited. However, he seems to have seen off the challenges of Angelo Peruzzi, Luca Marchegiani and Gianluca Pagluica as second choice. He took over as number two when Peruzzi was forced to pull out of the Italian squad at the 1998 FIFA World Cup. An excellent shot-stopper, Toldo's size also makes him a formidable figure. Became no 1 keeper of the Euro 2000 Forza Azurra after Buffon's injury.
