Internet2 or UCAID (University Corporation for Advanced Internet Development) is a non-profit consortium which develops and deploys advanced network applications and technologies, for education and high-speed data transfer purposes. It is led by 212 universities [1] and partners with 60 companies in areas from the networking (Cisco Systems, Nortel and others), publishing (Prous Science) and technology industries such as Comcast, Intel and Sun Microsystems. "Internet2" is a registered trademark [2].

Es wurde 1996 von der University Corporation for Advanced Internet Development (UCAID) initialisiert. Ob die UCAID das von ihr entwickelte Netz als Internet2 bezeichnen darf, ist umstritten. (Der Begriff Internet2 sollte nicht mit dem Begriff Web 2.0 verwechselt werden, der seit ca. 2004 eine Evolutions-Stufe des World Wide Web, seiner Technik und seiner Nutzung bezeichnet.)

Esso viene gestito da 207 diverse università statunitensi e fanno parte anche numerose industrie specializzate nel settore (come AT&T, Intel, Sun Microsystems e Cisco Systems), Qwest Communication International (finanziatrice del progetto) e National Science Foundation che già dal 1980 sponsorizzò varie università per la realizzazione di reti proprie.

Internet2 (ook wel I2) is een samenwerkingsverband zonder winstoogmerk tussen ruim 200 universiteiten in de VS en een aantal bedrijven uit de informatietechnologie, waaronder AT&T, Intel, Sun Microsystems en Cisco Systems. Het doel is het ontwikkelen en in gebruik nemen van geavanceerde netwerktechnologieën, zoals IPv6, IP-multicasting en Quality of Service. Het is niet de bedoeling een afzonderlijk netwerk naast het reguliere internet te maken, maar juist om te zijner tijd de nieuwe technologieën hiervoor bruikbaar te maken.

Seu piloto, a Rede Rio 2, começou a operar no Rio de Janeiro em abril de 1999, dois meses depois de a internet2 ter sido lançada nos Estados Unidos. Voltada para projetos nas áreas de saúde, educação e administração pública, oferece aos usuários recursos que não estão disponíveis na internet comercial, como a criação de laboratórios virtuais e de bibliotecas digitais.

Internet2 (I2) o UCAID (University Corporation for Advanced Internet Development) es un consorcio sin fines de lucro que desarrolla aplicaciones y tecnologías de redes avanzadas, la mayoría para transferir información a alta velocidad. Internet2 es una red telemática desarrollada principalmente por las universidades estadounidenses, construida en fibra óptica y permite altas velocidades con una gran fiabilidad. Es llevado por 208 universidades de Estados Unidos y otras 60 compañías tecnológicas como Comcast, Microsoft, Intel, Sun Microsystems y Cisco Systems. Algunas de las tecnologías que han desarrollado han sido IPv6, IP Multicast y Calidad de Servicio (QoS).

Internet2 je projekt vybudování nové vysokorychlostní síte v USA, který prinese zejména vysokým školám možnost využívat nejmodernejší technologie. Nejedná se tedy o vznik zcela nové síte. Z puvodních 34 clenu amerických univerzit má sít dnes již více jak 150 clenu a to jak vnitrní síte tak i mnoha partnerských institucí. Dnes už infrastruktura síte pokrývá celé Spojené státy. Obsluhu síte zajištují skupiny. Ty mají jasne definované oblasti svých povinností (správu síte, kvalitu služeb, merení a podobne).
