Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)
Formerly the Federal Aviation Agency, the Federal Aviation Administration was established by the Federal Aviation Act of 1958 (49 U.S.C. 106) and became a component of the Department of Transportation in 1967 pursuant to the Department of Transportation Act (49 U.S.C. app. 1651 note). The Administration is charged with 1) regulating air commerce in ways that best promote its development and safety and fulfill the requirements of national defense. 2) controlling the use of navigable airspace of the United States and regulating both civil and military operations in such airspace in the interest of safety and efficiency. 3) promoting, encouraging, and developing civil aeronautics. 4) consolidating research and development with respect to air navigation facilities. 5) installing and operating air navigation facilities. 6) developing and operating a common system of air traffic control and navigation for both civil and military aircraft. and 7) developing and implementing programs and regulations to control aircraft noise, sonic boom, and other environmental effects of civil aviation. Federal Aviation Administration
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is an agency of the United States Department of Transportation with authority to regulate and oversee all aspects of civil aviation in the U.S. The Federal Aviation Act of 1958 created the group under the name "Federal Aviation Agency", and adopted its current name in 1967 when it became a part of the United States Department of Transportation.
