epstein-barr virus (ebv¸ human herpes virus 4)
a herpesvirus. EBV infection is common and usually asymptomatic in children, and may cause infectious mononucleosis ("kissing disease") in young adults. EBV lies dormant in the lymph nodes. It is associated with oral hairy leukoplakia, lymphoid interstitial pneumonitis and some types of cancer in people with suppressed immune systems.

EPSTEIN-BARR VIRUS
A herpes-like virus that causes one of the two kinds of mononucleosis (the other is caused by CMV, see). It infects the nose and throat and is contagious. EBV lies dormant in the lymph glands and has been associated with Burkitt's lymphoma and hairy leukoplakia.

Epstein-Barr virus
The Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), also called Human herpesvirus 4 (HHV-4), is a virus of the herpes family (which includes Herpes simplex virus and Cytomegalovirus), and is one of the most common viruses in humans. Most people become infected with EBV, which is often asymptomatic but commonly causes infectious mononucleosis.
