A
dungeon crawl is a type of
role-playing adventure in which the heroes fight their way through an extensive
labyrinthine environment (first dubbed "
dungeons", but can be anything--such as a
castle or
cave), battling various monsters and setting appropriate traps, and looting any treasure they may find. The term can be used in a pejorative sense, since dungeon crawls often lack any meaningful plot or logical consistency. (The parody game
Munchkin, as described on its home page, is about "the essence of the dungeon experience... Kill the monsters, steal the treasure, stab your buddy.") Because of the dungeon crawl's simplicity, it can be easier for a
gamemaster to run than a more complex adventure, and the "
hack and slash" style of play common in dungeon crawls is appreciated by many players who focus on the action and combat aspects of the game.
