NCI Dictionary of Cancer Terms
Down syndrome
A disorder caused by the presence of an extra chromosome 21 and characterized by mental retardation and distinguishing physical features.

Dictionary of Medicine (Shahram)
Down syndrome
A common chromosome disorder due to an extra chromosome number 21 (trisomy 21). Down syndrome causes mental retardation, a characteristic face, and multiple malformations. It is associated with a major risk for heart problems, a lesser risk of duodenal atresia (part of the intestines not developed), and a minor but still significant risk of acute leukemia. The name Down syndrome comes from the 19th century English doctor Langdon Down. He was curiously enough not the first person to describe the condition, added little to knowledge and, in great error, attributed the condition to a "reversion" to the mongoloid race. The disorder was also once called mongolism, a term now considered slang.

Down syndrome
Down syndrome or trisomy 21 (usually Down's Syndrome in British English) is a genetic disorder caused by the presence of all or part of an extra 21st chromosome. It is named after John Langdon Down, the British doctor who described it in 1866. The disorder was identified as a chromosome 21 trisomy by Jérôme Lejeune in 1959. The condition is characterized by a combination of major and minor differences in structure. Often Down syndrome is associated with some impairment of cognitive ability and physical growth as well as facial appearance. Down syndrome can be identified during pregnancy or at birth.
