In American English, the term dago refers to Italians and Italian Americans, especially recent immigrants and others not fully assimilated into Anglo-American culture. It was originally used to describe Spanish sailors by British naval personnel during the 18th and 19th centuries, and in modern British English continues to refer to people of Spanish or Hispanic origin.
