Internet Glossary
DVD
Short for digital versatile disc or digital video disc, a new type of CD-ROM that holds a minimum of 4.7GB (gigabytes), enough for a full-length movie. Many experts believe that DVD disks, called DVD-ROMs, will eventually replace CD-ROMs, as well as VHS video cassettes and laser discs.
The DVD specification supports disks with capacities of from 4.7GB to 17GB and access rates of 600KBps to 1.3 MBps. One of the best features of DVD drives is that they are backward-compatible with CD-ROMs. This means that DVD players can play old CD-ROMs, CD-I disks, and video CDs, as well as new DVD-ROMs. Newer DVD players can also read CD-R disks.

DVD uses MPEG-2 to compress video data.

Television and Video Glossary
DVD (originally "Digital Video Disk"¸ now "Digital Versatile Disk")
A 5" plastic disk that looks like a compact disk, using the same concept of microscopic pits arranged in a spiral and read using a laser. Except for double sided DVD's (CD's come only single sided) the only way to tell the difference is to look at the label or markings engraved near the center. Today's DVD's can play a movie with more resolution than 12 inch laser disks and just over four hours in length without the need to stop the player and turn the disk over. Double sided DVD's can have a "pan and scan" version of a movie on one side and a wide screen version on the other. Or programs can be recorded with different camera angles you can choose from. The present NTSC DVD picture is usually 704 or 720 (occasionally 640) pixels across by 480 pixels high compared with LD's up to 565 details across (425 lines) and approx. 480 scan lines high. Using S-Video (Y/C) or component video inputs, DVD has much better color  horizontal resolution, up to 270 lines for all colors versus LD's 40 to 120 lines for different colors. As of May 1998 no consumer products are available to record one's own DVD's but the promise is there for the future. A CD player cannot play a DVD; most DVD players can play CD's. For computer use, the nominal capacity of a DVD is 4.7 gigabytes per layer; there may be one or two layers per side, and disks may be double sided.

DVD's
Glossary of CD and DVD Technologies - a new standard for recording video on CD-ROM's using MPEG 2, thus boasting better-than-broadcast TV quality. Costing about the same as a CD, DVD-ROM's hold 8 to 40 times more data. Sony/Phillips and Toshiba/Time, the two major developers, predict DVD will replace videocassettes, laserdiscs, CD-ROM's and audio CD's. Recently (June '97) Hitachi announced a re-writable DVD, which may spell the end to re-writable CD's .

DVD (Digital Video Disc or Digital Versatile Disk)

Glossary of Computer and Internet Terms
DVD
Stands for "Digital Versatile Disc." If you hear people refer to DVDs as digital video discs, tell them they used to be right, but now, with the mulitple uses of DVDs, the correct term is "digital versatile disk." Yep, the technology naming people just love to confuse us... A DVD is a high-capacity optical disc that looks like a CD, but can store much more information. While a CD can store 650 MB of data, a single-layer, single-sided DVD can store 4.7GB of data. This allows for massive computer applications and full-length movies to be stored on a single DVD. Even more amazing are the other options available with DVD: There is a two-layer standard that doubles the single-sided capacity to 8.5GB. The disks can also be double-sided, ramping up the maximum storage on a single disc to 17GB. That's 26 times more data than a CD can hold! However, to be able to read DVDs in your computer you'll need a DVD-ROM drive. Fortunately, DVDs can also read your CDs, but to play DVD movies on your computer, you'll need to have a graphics card with a DVD-decoder.

Sound Escape Glossary of Terms
Digital Video Disc(DVD)
A new format for storing audio and visual data. Comparable in size to a CD (compact disc), the DVD has significantly more storage capacity (enough space to store a 133 minute movie) and can hold both A/V information and data (like subtitles, and multi-language title abilities.) CDs may be played in a DVD player and DVD players are available for computers and for A/V component systems. DVD features multi-language capabilities, multiple image ratios, parental controls, multi camera angles, and superb frame control that can allow a clear still picture.
The A/V information found on DVD is MPEG2, and the digital output of a DVD player to a A/V receiver is AC3 (Dolby digital).

DVD Definition from Encyclopedia Dictionaries & Glossaries

Wikipedia English - The Free Encyclopedia
DVD
DVD (also known as "Digital Versatile Disc" and "Digital Video Disc") is a popular optical disc storage media format used for data storage. Its main uses are for movies, software, and data archiving. Most DVDs are of the same dimensions as compact discs (CDs) but store more than 6 times the data.

The term DVD is used in describing three ways that data is stored on the disks — DVD-ROM has data which can only be read and not written,  DVD-R can be written once and then functions as a DVD-ROM, and DVD-RAM holds data that can be re-written multiple times.

DVD-Video and DVD-Audio discs respectively refer to properly formatted and structured video and audio content. Everything else, including other types of DVD discs with video content, is referred to as a DVD-Data disc. DVD is also used generically to refer to HD (High Density) video disc formats Blu-ray and HD DVD.

DVD±R
DVD±R (also DVD+/-R, "DVD plus/dash R", or "DVD plus/minus R") is not a separate DVD format, but rather is a shorthand term for a DVD drive that can accept both of the common recordable DVD formats. Likewise, DVD±RW (also written as DVD±R/W, DVD±R/RW, DVD±R/±RW, DVD+/-RW, and other arbitrary ways) handles both common rewritable disc types (but not usually DVD-RAM).  [1]
