Background
Following the First World War, the closely related Czechs and Slovaks of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire merged to form Czechoslovakia. During the interwar years, the new country's leaders were frequently preoccupied with meeting the demands of other ethnic minorities within the republic, most notably the Sudeten Germans and the Ruthenians (Ukrainians). After World War II, a truncated Czechoslovakia fell within the Soviet sphere of influence. In 1968, an invasion by Warsaw Pact troops ended the efforts of the country's leaders to liberalize Communist party rule and create "socialism with a human face." Anti-Soviet demonstrations the following year ushered in a period of harsh repression. With the collapse of Soviet authority in 1989, Czechoslovakia regained its freedom through a peaceful "Velvet Revolution." On 1 January 1993, the country underwent a "velvet divorce" into its two national components, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The Czech Republic joined NATO in 1999 and the European Union in 2004.

The Czech national football team is the national football team of the Czech Republic and is controlled by the Football Association of the Czech Republic.

Before World War IBohemia (present-day Czech Republic), while being part of Austria-Hungary, played seven matches between 1903 and 1908, six of them against Hungary and one against England. Bohemia also played a match against Germany in 1939 while being the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia.

When the Czech Republic was part of Czechoslovakia, the national team had runner-up finishes in World Cups (19341962) and a European Championship win in 1976. After Czechoslovakia split into the Czech Republic and Slovakia, the national team was reformed, and played its first match against Turkey in 1994.

Now, the Czech Republic is continuing its football tradition, finishing second in Euro 96 and making the semifinals of Euro 2004. They made their first World Cup as an independent country in 2006 and they currently are the second-ranked country on Earth according to the FIFA World Rankings behind only powerhouse Brazil.

The Under-21 national team of Czech Republic won the European championship in 2002.

    Bejbl, Radek
    Atletico Madrid & Czech Republic

    Birthdate: August 29, 1972
    Birthplace: Nymbruck, Czech Republic
    Height: 185 cm
    Weight: 78 kg
    Position: Midfielder
    International: 45 caps, 3 goals
    World Cups: 0
Previous Clubs: Mlada, Nymbruck, Slavia Praha
    Transfer Fee: -
He made his national-team debut while only 20, and has hardly looked back since, establishing a burgeoning reputation as a committed defensive midfielder. He helped previous club SK Slavia Praha to win the Czech league and reach the UEFA Cup semi-final in 1996. Subsequently, his displays for the national team in Euro 96 earned him a lucrative transfer to Spanish side Club Atlético de Madrid. An accomplished ball-winner, Bejbl’s hard work in midfield frees colleagues Pavel, Nedved, Patrick Berger and Vladimir Smicer to concentrate more on attacking. His value to the Czech side is indicated by the fact that when he returned after missing the middle four games of the Euro 2000 qualifying campaign, the Czechs failed to concede a goal in their final three games.

    Koller, Jan
    Anderlecht & Czech Republic

    Birthdate: March 30, 1973
    Birthplace: Lhota, Czech Republic
    Height: 202 cm
    Weight: 101 kg
    Position: Forward
    International: 12 caps, 11 goals
    World Cups: 0
    Previous Clubs: Sparta Praha, Lokeren
    Transfer Fee: -
At 202 cm tall, his height is obviously his primary asset, but that is more than matched by an excellent eye for goal that has made him one of the most prolific strikers in Europe. He forms a highly effective “little-and-large” partnership with Vladimir Smicer. He has plundered over 30 goals in just over a season and a half in the Belgian league, firstly with KSC Lokeren and then RSC Anderlecht. Seemingly a certain starter at the final round, the 27-year-old may earn himself a lucrative move to one of the major leagues should he continue his prolific international strike-rate.

    Kuka, Pavel
    VfB Stuttgart & Czech Republic

    Birthdate: July 19, 1968
    Birthplace: Praha, Czech Republic
    Height: 1.83 mts

Previous Clubs: Union Cheb, Slavia Praha, Kaiserslautern, FC Nürnberg

The goal scorer is no longer a starter in Czech Rep squad due to recurrent injuries. He was one of the stars of Euro ‘96, but was largely used a substitute in the competition campaign, in which he scored two goals. He manages to get into many great positions, but he has a reputation for needing several chances to score. He scored in his international debut against Finland in 1990 and was voted Czech Player of the Year in 1994.

    Schalke 04 & Czech Republic
    Birthdate: May 15, 1966

    World Cups: 1 (1990)
Previous Clubs: Ceske Budejovice, Dukla Praha, Sparta Praha
    Transfer Fee: -
The Czech captain is the most experienced player in the squad, and, like Radek Bejbl, adds some strength and steel to complement the skill and subtlety of the many more talented players in the side. He made his national-team debut in 1990, featured in the Czech squad for the 1990 World Cup and started every game in Euro 96. He operates in a more defensive role, almost as a wing-back. He is the link man in the side, and his leadership qualities were in evidence when he helped FC Schalke 04 to UEFA Cup success in 1996/97. Voted Czech Player of the Year in 1997.

    Poborsky, Karel
    Benefica & Czech Republic

He won the Czech league title and reached the UEFA Cup semi-final with SK Slavia Praha, and secured a dream transfer to Manchester United FC. He was selected for the official Euro 96 team of the tournament, and was universally acclaimed for his dribbling skills and ability to unsettle defenders. He found his first-team opportunities limited at Old Trafford, and moved on to SL Benfica.

    Repka, Tomas
    Fiorentina & Czech Republic

    Birthdate: January 2, 1974
    Birthplace: Slavicin Zlin, Czech Republic

Previous Clubs: Banik Ostrava, Sparta Praha
    Transfer Fee: -
Managed to secure a transfer from AC Sparta Praha to AC Fiorentina in 1998, and has gone on to establish himself as one of the most accomplished defenders in Serie A. His key strengths are his aerial ability and his natural competitive spirit.

    Smicer, Vladimir
    Liverpool & Czech Republic

    Birthplace: Praha, Czech Republic
    Height: 1.80 mts
    Weight: 71 kgs

    World Cups: 0
    Previous Clubs: Slavia Praha, Lens

Possessing excellent ball control skills, he usually operates behind the front pair for his country, though he features as a wide midfielder for his club. With SK Slavia Praha he won the league title in 1995, then move to RC Lens. He was a pivotal figure in their shock French league success in 1997/98. He hit peak form that season for his country as well, scoring 13 goals in 15 matches. Top Scorer in 1997 Confederations Cup.

    Suchoparek, Jan
