A Brush With Greatness Glossary
Cubism
One of the most influential art movements of the twentieth century. In Cubism the subject matter is broken up, analyzed, and reassembled in an abstracted form. The movement follows Paul Cézanne's idea that nature should be treated in terms of the cylinder, sphere, and cone. Cubism was developed by Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque, who were greatly inspired by African sculpture, the painters Cézanne, and Seurat, and by the Fauvists. Some other Cubism followers were Alfred Henry Maurer, Fernand Léger and Max Weber.

Fine Art Terminology
Cubism
An art style developed in 1908 by
Picasso and Braque whereby the artist breaks down
the natural forms of the subjects into geometric
shapes and creates a new kind of pictorial space. In
contrast to traditional painting styles where the
perspective of subjects is fixed and complete, cubist
work can portray the subject from multiple
perspectives.

Cubism
Cubism was a 20th century art movement that revolutionized European painting and sculpture, and inspired related movements in music and literature. Analytic Cubism, was both radical and influential, it initially developed as a short but highly significant art movement between 1908 and 1911 in France. In its second phase Synthetic Cubism, the movement spread and remained vital until around 1919, when the Surrealist movement gained popularity.
