Glossary of the European Information Society
ATM (Asynchronous transfer mode)
It is an international packet switching standard established by the CCITT. It is asystem for organising a digital signal in such a way as to allow very high speed transmission of the signal while making optimum use of the network's transmission capacity. A standard agreed for B-ISDN networks.

A Glossary of Internet & PC Terminology
ATM
Asynchronous Transfer Mode - a networking standard which is predicted by many experts to be the networking protocol of the future.

Internetworking Terms
Asynchronous Transfer Mode
A method for the dynamic allocation of bandwidth using a fixed- size packet (called a cell). ATM is also known as "fast packet".

Fiber Optics, Optical Networking Terms
Asynchronous Transfer Mode
A digital transmission switching format, with c containing 5 bytes of header information followed by 48 data bytes. Part of the B-ISDN standard.

Telecommunication Standard Terms
asynchronous transfer mode (ATM)
A high-speed multiplexing and switching method utilizing fixed-length cells of 53 octects to support multiple types of traffic. Note: ATM, specified in international standards, is asynchronous in the sense that cells carrying user data need not be periodic.

Wikipedia English - The Free Encyclopedia
Asynchronous Transfer Mode
Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) is a cell relaypacket switching network and data link layer protocol which encodes data traffic into small (53 bytes; 48 bytes of data and 5 bytes of header information) fixed-sized cells. ATM provides data link layer services that run over Layer 1 links. This differs from other technologies based on packet-switched networks (such as the Internet Protocol or Ethernet), in which variable sized packets (known as frames when referencing layer 2) are used. ATM is a connection-oriented technology, in which a logical connection is established between the two endpoints before the actual data exchange begins.
