The nearest spiral galaxy to our own Milky Way. It is 2.2 million light years away and contains in the region of 4 x 1011 stars. The Andromeda galaxy is believed to be a twin of the Milky Way. Their combined gravitational influence dominates the Local Group of galaxies. It is designated M31 in the Messier Catalogue and NGC 224 in the New General Catalogue. Andromeda is surrounded by a number of satellite galaxies and globular clusters. [ Picture ].
