Aluminium Conductor Steel Reinforced
Aluminium Conductor Steel Reinforced (or ACSR) cable is a specific type of high-capacity, high-strength stranded cable used in overhead power lines. The outer strands are aluminum, chosen for its excellent conductivity, low weight, and low cost. The center strand is of steel, providing extra strength. The lower electrical conductivity of the steel core has only a minimal effect on the current-carrying capacity of the cable, however, due to the skin effect which would result in most of the current flowing through the outer, aluminum portion of the cable even before the influence of the inner, steel conductor's higher resistance.
