John O'Brien, the first and only American to sign a player's contract with Ajax, made his first-team debut on 15 September, 1999 in Ajax's opening game of the UEFA Cup. He subbed in for Aaron Winter in the 77th minute. Since then, John has started most Ajax matches, both in league and in Europe, except where he was unavailable due to injury. John usually plays on the outside of midfield for Ajax. John spent the 1998-99 season on loan from Ajax to FC Utrecht. He injured his foot in the final Dutch league game before the Winter break, and didn't play in another league match until his Ajax debut in September 1999.
