Overview
Afghans, like most sight hounds, are generally gentle dogs but are aloof and cautious with strangers. They are friendly with most other animals, although they may chase cats if not socialized with them early. They are very sensitive to strange noises. It is very important to socialize and obedience train these outstandingly graceful dogs from an early age.
Appearance
The long, flowing coat ranges in color from light and dark golden blond to black. Its texture is silky, except for the short hair on its back.
Grooming & Exercise Needs
Afghans require daily brushing and combing. A daily dose of vigorous exercise, such as several brisk walks, and the opportunity to run freely in a fenced-in area several times a week are necessary to avoid behavioral problems.
Origins
This aristocratic dog is known in the West as a competitor in the show ring and as a fashionable companion, but its origins are more rugged and earthy. It originated as a large-game hunting and falconing dog in the mountains of Afghanistan in the 17th century.

Afghan Hound
The Afghan Hound is a very old sighthound dog breed. Distinguished by its thick, fine, silky coat and its tail with a ring curl at the end, the breed acquired its unique features in the cold mountains of Afghanistan, where it was originally used to hunt wolves, foxes, and gazelles. Its local name is Tāzī . Other alternate names for this breed are Balkh Hound, Baluchi Hound, Barutzy Hound and Kabul Hound.
