Acid Rain Definition from Science & Technology Dictionaries & Glossaries

EIA Energy Glossary
Acid rain
Also called acid precipitation or acid deposition, acid rain is precipitation containing harmful amounts of nitric and sulfuric acids formed primarily by sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides released into the atmosphere when fossil fuels are burned. It can be wet precipitation (rain, snow, or fog) or dry precipitation (absorbed gaseous and particulate matter, aerosol particles or dust). Acid rain has a pH below 5.6. Normal rain has a pH of about 5.6, which is slightly acidic. The term pH is a measure of acidity or alkalinity and ranges from 0 to 14. A pH measurement of 7 is regarded as neutral. Measurements below 7 indicate increased acidity, while those above indicate increased alkalinity.

WEATHER&METEOROLOGY
Acid Rain
Acid deposition - commonly called acid rain - is caused by emissions of sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxides. Although natural sources of sulphur oxides and nitrogen oxides do exist, more than 90% of the sulphur and 95% of the nitrogen emissions occurring in eastern North America are of human origin. These primary air pollutants arise from the use of coal in the production of electricity, from base-metal smelting, and from fuel combustion in vehicles. Once released into the atmosphere, they can be converted chemically into such secondary pollutants as nitric acid and sulfuric acid, both of which dissolve easily in water. The resulting acidic water droplets can be carried long distances by prevailing winds, returning to Earth as acid rain, snow, or fog.

Oil and Gas Field Glossary
Acid Rain
Develops when sulphur oxides (SOx) and nitrogen oxides (NOx), released by the combustion of fossil fuels (particularly coal), combine with moisture in the atmosphere to form sulphurous, sulphuric, nitrous and nitric acids. Because SOx and NOx are gases and because the formation of acid rain takes tie, acid rain damage often occurs far from the source of the problem.

Technical English by wpv
ACID RAIN
Atmospheric precipitation with an pH below 5.6 to 5.7.

Physical Geography Terms and Meanings
Acid Rain
Rain with a pH less than 5.6. Normal pH of precipitation is 5.6.

Glossary Of Geography
Acid Rain
Rain that has become more acidic than normal (a pH below 5.0) as certain oxides present as airborne pollutants are absorbed by the water droplets. The term is often applied generically to all acidic precipitation.

EPA Glossary of Climate Change Terms
Acid rain
Rainwater that has an acidity content greater than the postulated natural pH of about 5.6. It is formed when sulfur dioxides and nitrogen oxides, as gases or fine particles in the atmosphere, combine with water vapor and precipitate as sulfuric acid or nitric acid in rain, snow, or fog. The dry forms are acidic gases or particulates. See acid depositionsulfur dioxidenitrogen oxides.

EPA Terms of Environment
Acid Rain

Environmental Engineering (English ver.)
Acid rain
Air pollution produced when acid chemicals are incorporated into rain, snow, fog or mist. The "acid" in acid rain comes from sulfur oxides and nitrogen oxides, products of burning coal and other fuels and from certain industrial processes. The sulfur oxides and nitrogen oxides are related to two strong acids- sulfuric acid and nitric acid. When sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides are released from power plants and other sources, winds blow them far from their source. If the acid chemicals in the air are blown into areas where the weather is wet, the acids can fall to Earth in the rain, snow, fog or mist. In areas where the weather is dry, the acid chemicals may become incorporated into dusts or smokes. Acid rain can damage the environment. human health and property.

acid rain (or acid precipitation)
rain with a pH of less than 5.6; results from atmospheric moisture mixing with sulphur and nitrogen oxides emitted from burning fossil fuels or from volcanic activity; may cause damage to buildings, monuments, car finishes, crops, forests, wildlife habitats, and aquatic life.

Acid Rain Definition from Social Science Dictionaries & Glossaries

Environmental Economics Glossary
Acid Rain
The precipitation of dilute solutions of strong mineral acids, formed by the mixing in the atmosphere of various industrial pollutants -- primarily sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides -- with naturally occurring oxygen and water vapor.

Glossary of Sociology
ACID RAIN
The increased acidity of rainfall which is caused by emissions of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides from power plants and automobiles.

Acid Rain Definition from Business & Finance Dictionaries & Glossaries

Raynet Business & Marketing Glossary
Acid Rain
is rain that is more acidic than normal. Caused by air pollution, acid rain’s spread and damage involves weather, chemistry, soil, and the life cycles of plants and animals on the land and from acid rain in the water. Air pollution from the burning of fossil fuels is the major cause of acid rain. Smoke and fumes from burning fossil fuels rise into the atmosphere and combine with the moisture in the air to form acid rain. The wet forms can fall as rain, snow, or fog. The dry forms are acidic gases or particulates.

Acid Rain Definition from Encyclopedia Dictionaries & Glossaries

Wikipedia English - The Free Encyclopedia
Acid rain
The term "acid rain" is commonly used to mean the deposition of acidic components in rain, snow, fog, dew, or dry particles. The more accurate term is "acid precipitation." Distilled water, which contains no carbon dioxide, has a neutral pH of 7. Liquids with a pH less than 7 are acidic, and those with a pH greater than 7 are alkaline (or basic). "Clean" or unpolluted rain has a slightly acidic pH of 5.6, because carbon dioxide and water in the air react together to form carbonic acid, a weak acid. The extra acidity in rain comes from the reaction of air pollutants, primarily sulfur oxides and nitrogen oxides, with water in the air to form strong acids (like sulfuric and nitric acid). The main sources of these pollutants are vehicles and industrial and power-generating plants.
