A++ Definition from Language, Idioms & Slang Dictionaries & Glossaries

Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary (1913)
A
The name of the sixth tone in the model major scale (that in C), or the first tone of the minor scale, which is named after it the scale in A minor. The second string of the violin is tuned to the A in the treble staff. -- A sharp (A/) is the name of a musical tone intermediate between A and B. -- A flat (A/) is the name of a tone intermediate between A and G.

The first letter of the English and of many other alphabets. The capital A of the alphabets of Middle and Western Europe, as also the small letter (a), besides the forms in Italic, black letter, etc., are all descended from the old Latin A, which was borrowed from the Greek Alpha, of the same form; and this was made from the first letter (/) of the Phoenician alphabet, the equivalent of the Hebrew Aleph, and itself from the Egyptian origin. The Aleph was a consonant letter, with a guttural breath sound that was not an element of Greek articulation; and the Greeks took it to represent their vowel Alpha with the a sound, the Phoenician alphabet having no vowel symbols.

Of.

In each; to or for each; as, "twenty leagues a day", "a hundred pounds a year", "a dollar a yard", etc.

an expletive, void of sense, to fill up the meter

An adjective, commonly called the indefinite article, and signifying one or any, but less emphatically.

A barbarous corruption of have, of he, and sometimes of it and of they.

(prep.)
In; on; at; by.

(prep.)
In process of; in the act of; into; to; -- used with verbal substantives in -ing which begin with a consonant. This is a shortened form of the preposition an (which was used before the vowel sound); as in a hunting, a building, a begging.

A-
A, as a prefix to English words, is derived from various sources. (1) It frequently signifies on or in (from an, a forms of AS. on), denoting a state, as in afoot, on foot, abed, amiss, asleep, aground, aloft, away (AS. onweg), and analogically, ablaze, atremble, etc. (2) AS. of off, from, as in adown (AS. ofd/ne off the dun or hill). (3) AS. a- (Goth. us-, ur-, Ger. er-), usually giving an intensive force, and sometimes the sense of away, on, back, as in arise, abide, ago. (4) Old English y- or i- (corrupted from the AS. inseparable particle ge-, cognate with OHG. ga-, gi-, Goth. ga-), which, as a prefix, made no essential addition to the meaning, as in aware. (5) French a (L. ad to), as in abase, achieve. (6) L. a, ab, abs, from, as in avert. (7) Greek insep. prefix / without, or privative, not, as in abyss, atheist; akin to E. un-.

These letters occur in the text of Rev. 1:8,11; 21:6; 22:13, and are represented by "Alpha" and "Omega" respectively (omitted in R.V., 1:11). They mean "the first and last." (Comp. Helmholtz free energy (Arbeitfunktion)
    (A) A thermodynamic property that can be used to predict whether a process will occur spontaneously at constant volume and temperature. Helmholtz free energy A is defined as A = U - TS where U, T and S are the internal energy , temperature , and entropy . Changes in A correspond to changes in free energy for processes occuring at constant temperature and volume. The sign of Delta A is negative for spontaneous processes and zero for processes at equilibrium .

absorptivity (extinction coefficient; absorption cross section; decadic absorptivity)
     Say it
    (a) Compare with molar absorptivity and absorbance .The absorbance of a solution per unit of path length and per unit concentration; a = A/(bc) where a, A, b, and c are the absorptivity, absorbance, path length, and concentration, respectively. Absorptivity varies with wavelength of the incident light.

    activity
    (a) An effective thermodynamic concentration used in thermodynamic calculations in place of the actual concentration to allow equations developed for ideal solutions to be used to treat real solutions.

    ampere (amp.)
     Say it
    (A) The SI unit of electric current , equal to flow of 1 coulomb of charge per second. Å
The letter Å represents various ò sounds in the SwedishFinnishDanishNorwegianNorth FrisianWalloonChamorro and Istro-Romanian language alphabets. Other alphabets using the letter include the Lule SamiSkolt Sami and Southern Sami alphabet.

Å is often perceived as an A with a ring, interpreting the ring as a diacritical mark. However, in the languages that use it, the ring is not considered a diacritic but part of the letter. It developed as a form of semi-ligature of an A with another smaller a above it to denote a long a, similar to how the umlaut mark ¨ is developed from a small e written above the letter in question.

    A* search algorithm
In computer science, A* (pronounced “A star”) is a graph/tree search algorithm that finds a path from a given initial node to a given goal node (or one passing a given goal test). It employs a “heuristic estimate” that ranks each node by an estimate of the best route that goes through that node. It visits the nodes in order of this heuristic estimate. The A* algorithm is therefore an example of best-first search.

    Bell character
Bell character is an ASCII control character, code 7 (^G). When it is sent to a printer or a terminal, nothing is printed, but an audible signal is emitted instead. Terminal emulator windows often flash briefly to show the user where the alert occurred.

A bell code also exists in Baudot code, which has been used in teleprinters in some form since 1874. Sending a bell code would get the attention of the teleprinter operator at the other end of the line.

In the C programming language, the bell character is represented as '\a' ("alert" or "audible"). In Unicode, there is a character for visual representation of bell character, ”symbol for bell“, U+2407 — not to be confused with the actual bell character, U+0007.

    Floppy disk
A floppy disk is a data storage device that is composed of a disk of thin, flexible ("floppy") magnetic storage medium encased in a square or rectangular plastic shell. Floppy disks are read and written by a floppy disk drive or FDD, the initials of which should not be confused with "fixed disk drive", which is another term for a hard disk drive. Invented by IBM, floppy disks in 8", 5.25", and 3.5" formats enjoyed many years as a popular and ubiquitous form of data storage and exchange, from the middle 1970s to the late 1990s. However, they have now been largely superseded by Flash and optical storage devices while email has become the preferred method of exchanging small to medium digital files.
